So ya, I think your rant is deserved somewhat...but the 24 hr rule is understandable. If he's approachable at other times then it's okay. If the guy's a tool, well then he's a tool.

Ah, I bet I can guess who the former Flame is... I have heard stories about a certain ex-Flame.

As a coach myself, I know that our whole association has a 24-hour policy. I'm not sure about other associations though. I've never enforced it though. I haven't really had any problems with parents, we had a bit of an overzealous dad last year but he was managable. Although I know when my Dad coaches he had plenty of wingnuts for parents. One parent would email him at work to talk about line combos, one even tried to come on the bench mid game and try to fight him. Believe me there are some parents who are outright ridiculous, but the vast majority are fine.

Article in the Herald discussing the Respect in Sports program.
Link.
"By midnight on Friday, Hockey Calgary had recorded 10,980 parents who had finished the mandatory course, said association president Perry Cavanagh.
He estimates less than five per cent of parents -- perhaps a few hundred -- haven't taken the program"

As a wealthy elitist, I say more parents get enraged and quit, thereby opening more and earlier ice times for we well adjusted old guys.

i wonder what the 5% are waiting for? how do you tell your kid that their season is over, because you won't make a one hour investment?

My understanding is that those children will be eligible to play as soon as a parent or guardian completes the presentation.
The 15th wast just the day the kids could play until if nobody had completed the training.

From what I remember from CTV News, the kids can attend practice, but can't play games until a parent completes the program.

I did the course as well - wasn't looking forward to it but when all was said and done feel it is VERY worthwhile... From my perspective, although unfortunate, this is much needed and I'm glad it's manditory. My son is in his fifth year of hockey now in Atom, he is involved in the top guns program as well and the higher he gets the worse some of parents get. My perspective also comes from coaching for the past 15 years ranging from young kids to college to pro - without things like this it is going to get harder and harder to not only find good coaches but good refs too - if you get that worked up about needing to take something like this for the betterment of sport and all our kids then you are proof on how badly it's needed... Also the 24 hour rule is brilliant - anything that can't wait 24 hours doesn't need to be said....

I have to agree that its those one or two parents going over the line that ruins it for all parents. One of my teammate's dad would be constantly be yelling at the ref or coach or other parents and it would get so bad it was almost distracting from the game. Though for me playing Junior C, I highly doubt parents would be a problem. Theres not very many expectations at this level, but you still never know..

There was a game a few years back where the game was played with the stands empty - no fans, no parents, nobody was allowed to be in there. This was all due to a previous game where the fans from the two sides almost got into or did get into a fight.

Thats rediculous that parents get the crazy about a Minor hockey game. I mean you want to be there to support your kids team but to go so far that no one is allowed to attend the game is mind blowing...
