Video Games that didn't age well.
So there are games that you can go back and play at any time. We all have them and love them; games like Final Fantasy 7, Super Mario Bros. (pretty much all of them) tend to be just as fun now when you go back to them? But what are some games that used to be great, but when you play them now you just can't figure out what you saw in it?
For it, Resident Evil 2 is a game like this. I just went back to playing it again today, and after two hours I couldn't take it. The graphics aren't the biggest deal, although they do suffer a lot more than Mario which didn't take the realistic route to begin with.
The controls are draconian and stunted. I've never had such a hard time figuring out how to go forward and turn at the very beginning of a game in my life. The clumsy aiming system was also a gigantic kick in the ass.
And on top of that, it seems easier than I remember it. The puzzles were just stupid easy now.
How about you? What are some games you've gone back and played and were just sad at how bad it was?

Stanley Cup hockey for the Super Nintendo gets my vote. At the time, the psuedo-3D graphics made the game cool. Now, they give me a headache.
I still do play it for nostalgia's sake. However, I don't play very long 'cause it looks brutal.
I enjoy older and newer hockey games more. The whole "half 3D" era often looked terrible.

There is no such thing. Games are either good or bad and their technology has to be judged in context of their times and whether or not you enjoy that kind of game or have any kind of memories of those eras that swing your judgement either way.
Games don't age badly, they are just bad.

Disagree... there are things like scalability that affect how well a game ages. E.g. Starcraft locking resolution to 640x480 ... how much better would it have aged if it supported better resolutions?

That was back when games could be overtly racist and sexist without generating a media ruckus.
As for games that didn't age well, I'm thinking all the first-generation 3D games like Metal Gear Solid, FF7, etc. The 3D graphics were nifty, but the models/textures so primitive they just appear like horribly deformed blobs by even old standard.

Leisure Suit Larry was great at the time. Answering political questions to make aure you were 18. Getting to see 8 bit boobs. They're not so awesome anymore.

I still enjoy playing Metal Gear Solid. The whole game was revolutionary, and really gave the Playstation one of its first BIG hits. Characters, controls, and story were all top notch.

Goldeneye. Awesome game at the time, does NOT hold up well.
Also, Sonic Adventure is an absolute disaster. Everyone has rosy memories of it but the game is trash. For reference, go look up reviews of the original release, and the release of last month's XBLA release. Yeah, proof that games can age badly.

True. But you could have at least mentioned a *good* 8-bit RPG.

I just replayed Dragon Warrior. I still had fun with it....
Hrm... the only one that comes to mind is Twisted Metal 1 and 2. I tried replaying them and they just seem SLOW. Console games shouldn't have lag. I loved both games to death when they came out, but I tried to replay them and 10 minutes in, tossed them both in a drawer to collect dust forevermore.
