According to this press release from the NYC police and the FBI.

A statement from the New York City Police Department posted on the ABC News Web site said, “Intelligence reporting indicates that al-Qaida continues to target for attack commercial and financial institutions, as well as international organizations, inside the United States.”

Was watching CNN last night, and it seems the reports are a little conflicting. One report claims that the "chatter" indicates very precise threats (car bombs, truck bombs) while other reports say that the intelligence is not precise enough to indicate what type of attack will occur in NY, but that an attack in NY is imminent.

In this case, they're mentioning specific buildings in specific locations. The IMF and World Bank headquarters in Washington. Prudential headquarters in Newark New Jersey, Citigroup and the NYSE in Manhattan.

And that is terrorism at it's finest

For anyone living in the New York area!!! What is the feeling like there?

This threat seemed a little more serious and specific

If I worked at any of the places that were mentioned in that report - there is no way I would be going into work on Monday.

No job is worth risking your life for.

I'm sure that those institutions will be doing some "quick hiring" come next week, to replace scared ex-staff.

The front of the New York Daily News website - under breaking news - gives you some indication of what its like after the press conference today.

http://www.nydailynews.com/

Would you feel safe in this building?:

NEWARK — Police set up metal fences surrounding the Prudential Plaza building, blocked off two city streets, and armed themselves with assault rifles Sunday after federal authorities warned of a possible terrorist attack on it and other financial institutions.
State officials said the plan that was uncovered included dates and details of the office building in the middle of the city’s downtown.

But this woman is skeptical:

Kristin White, 23, a Seton Hall Law School student from Houston, said the weapons and the police presence were the things that made her “very nervous.” She said she did not take the terror threat seriously. “I don’t feel threatened at all because I don’t trust the reliability of these threats. I don’t trust the reliability of these sources and I don’t know if I trust the message or the messenger,” she said. “Is this a hoax by the government? Is there some other intent?”

The terrorist attack warnings are a fine line indeed. On one hand, if you issue warnings about every little rumbling that is intercepted, you get alot of 'Screw it, how many times have I heard this'. On the other hand, if issue to few warnings, then it looks like you are not protecting your citizens or not taking the terrorist threat seriously.

I think this is starting to become a good tactic the terrorists are using though. A few minor rumblings about 'lets bomb this place...' and a few million dollars are spent increasing security and warning everyone to stay clear of that place...

you'd be surprised how resilient people are. the attitude in my impression has always been " screw you terrorists, im not changing the way i live for you". New Yorkers are known as generally pretty tough and stubborn, so it will be hard to sway their resolve.
The more you knock them, the more they stick together.

At first when I moved to NYC, I was a little apprehensive about riding the subways because it seems like such an obvious target, and even though the thoughs creep into your head every once in a while ( especially on a nice and busy morning when the trains and stations are packed ), you soon realize that worrying about it wont help, and go on and do your daily ritual as normal. If something happens, there is probably little you can do about it anyway, so so be it I guess. I'll be honest with you though, when there are cops virtually everywhere you go, its hard to ignore things sometimes. Im growing to like taking the bus more and more.

And to tell you the truth Im a little more aprehensive flying into New York than I am living there. Because when im there, I have WAY too many other things to worry about ( such as paying $1500 for a one-bedroom shoebox! )

The reason for naming the specific targets is explained in this story...

Chilling.
