I don't understand the use of lying on a dating site. Wouldn't it be best to set up the other party with reasonable (or even lowered) expectations? I suppose they are going for the "foot in the door" technique.

If I was single again I'd be all over online dating. I have one buddy who met his wife on the internet. She's smoking hot and was just too shy to meet guys at bars.

Ya mon, I'm with ya on that one. I put myself out there as me; if a woman likes it, that's great; if not, we're better off not wasting each other's time. It's mind-boggling how many people use these sites, and it's tiring trying to read between the lines of profile after templated profile to get a feeling for if there might be something there worth chasing further. Of course, I'm guessing that the young kids might be chasing a more casual dating world than us middle-aged folks, so the 'foot in the door' approach might be a bit more logical for them.

Bump. Another good one entitled "The Real Stuff White People Like" looks at the words used in dating profiles that are unique to different self-stated races and by gender: http://blog.okcupid.com/index.php/th...e-people-like/

Here's my findings so far: chicks will lie about their age. And they'll use a photo from the past. Like, the distant past. Like... the '90's or something. So basically, some grandmother will say she's 33, and put up a photo from when she was 33.

Now, on Facebook I can see a woman using a mediocre photo to ward off unwanted male attention, but a dating site... the photo nearly always flatters the reality. Count on it.
How about the girl that uploads a picture of herself and a friend? We are left to guess which one is her, and it is safe to assume she is the less attractive one.
