So my sister in law gave my wife an old iPhone, that was used on the Fido network.

We are on Rogers, so I would like to unlock it so my wife can play with the touch screen so she can decide if she can use the touch keyboard. The phone is in pretty bad shape, with heavy scratches so I can't tell what model it is. It has a black back, and it is 8GB.

Anyway I can tell which model it is? iTunes wont give me any information on it that I can see. It complains that there is no sim card, or if we use a rogers sim card it complains that the sim card isn't supported.

Any idea on figuring out the model? Once I do that, what is the best way to jail break an older model? I assume it is whatever it is whatever model came before the 3G.

edit: I pulled out a magnified glass and figured out a couple of the model number and I am pretty sure it is a Model A1241, which is an iPhone 3G. All the things I am reading say I need to figure out which version of firmware I need, is that something I can figure out without a functioning sim?

So there seems like a dozen ways of jailbreaking it but most claim they cannot unlock.

What would be the preferred method in my case?

Visit jailbreakme.com in safari, slide to jailbreak. After that's done open cydia and download ultrasn0w. That Will unlock it.

Jailbreakme only works up to 4.0.1. For 4.1 you have to use limera1n

limera1n make alarm bells go off in Norton. I'm assuming people here wouldn't recommend something that isn't safe for the laptop, but... this is safe, right? I'm not going to get virused out am I.

As long as you download it from the direct source (limera1n.com) it might report a virus but it is safe. but download it from official source

So I tried to get this phone working.

realized the power button was borked beyond belief, and of course that is rather essential for the jail breaking process. Took the phone apart and managed to make it so I could use a pen to press the 2 contacts in the button together and finally got it into recovery mode.

I figure I can probably work through the jailbreak process with my jury rig set up, but eventually it might be good to replace the power button. Is there a place in town that sells these parts, or a good place to order them from? Alternatively is there another option, such as an app that powers off the iPhone or something?

Except I don't have data on the phone, since it is a Fido phone with no sim card.

Maybe I am missing something then.

The phone is asking to be plugged into iTunes. It won't do anything but make an emergency call.

I plug into iTunes and it says either

a) your sim card (the rogers one) isn't supported
or
b) you don't have a sim card in it.

Am I supposed to be able to get onto wifi with this phone (3g)

Ohh, its unactivated. I thought it was already activated. My mistake. What you need to do is use redsn0w. The EASIEST way to do this would obtain a fido sim card, activate the iphone, then use jailbreakme.com. The other solution is a software based one, but if you can obtain a fido sim card for a few minutes it would be best.

limera!n jailbroke my 3GS running iOS 4.1

In the gap between my jailbreaks Cydia acquired Rock. I had some licenses with Rock. They transferred to Cydia with no problem. All of my apps worked. All repositories were still active. I now have an iOS 4.1 jailbroken phone.

Do you have a link for limera!n? The Dev Team have a jailbreak for 4.1, but it requires that the phone already be jailbroken on a previous version NOT USING SPIRIT. I jailbroke mine using Spirit so I'm still on 3.x

Devil's Advocate - Green Poison just came out - it is SUPPOSED to JB everything

I use http://www.redmondpie.com for all my Jailbreaking news/links.

FWIW - limerain to me just seemed rushed so he (Geohot) could get it out before Green Poison came out to get all the credit - I would assume that Green Poison is a little more polished and reliable. Plus they delayed the release after limerain came out to integrate the limerain stuff into it.
