You were hung out to dry, not much you can do about that - leading by example or not.

It's been pretty rough the last few days. As Merc mentioned to me last night, I'm currently tied for the team's worst +/-. Quite the feat after only playing a couple days since I got back. Ugh.

didn't that happen early on last year as well though? as i recall you turned it around and were one of the few that finished in the positive.

every time i play the game i just get frustrated with its mechanics. so i haven't been in the mood to play at all the last few days.

The connection was better yesterday but the lag makes it impossible to handle the puck and play normally. And it's not just me, others are experiencing the same thing.

I've only had the game for 2 days and I kind of feel the same way. There are just a number of things about the gameplay that really bother me. The first really stupid thing is that taking a slapshot on a 1 on 1 or partial breakaway situation is a reliable way to score a goal.... it's so stupid how accurate slapshots can be in this game. The other thing is the hitting, it looks cool, but at the same time people get rocked way too often. The one hit that I find happens WAY too often is when your skating and someone hits you from behind sending you flying.

The other thing is that I feel they have gone way too far with the boosts. For someone who got the game over a month after everyone else it's just stupid how big of a disadvantage I have when it comes to speed, checking, shot accuracy, etc. Not only do I have less experience than everyone, but my player sucks. At least with NHL 10 there wasn't such a drastic difference with boosts as there is this year.

The funny thing about this is it doesn't seem they have an animation of your player falling forward on your chest so if you're hit from behind you go feet forward and fall onto your back...looks ridiculous.

Jobo, I think you need to draw up a diagram or 2 for the defensive end.... I'm guilty of it too, but we have a tendency to chase the puck and we end up having 2 or 3 people behind the net chasing one guy leaving one guy outnumbered in front of the net.... although I have seen it happen, most guys aren't going to score from behind the net

Also, maybe a diagram for the breakout.... I think short passes are best, having 3 guys in the zone for the breakout is best, give the defense options.... a guy on each half boards and one in the middle.... the long passes, although they work sometimes, get intercepted more often then not and while everyone is rushing forward the puck ends up going the other way and it's 2 on 1, 3 on 1 the other way.... we need more of a strategic breakout, rather then everyone just skate forward and hope the pass gets to them.... and, with all 5 guys in the zone on the breakout, it's easier to recover if there is a turnover.... not to say that we shouldn't try for the breakaway pass, but if they have 3 or 4 guys back it's really pointless.... be aggressive, but be smart about it, it's hockey sense.

Not to sound like Sutter, but we need to be more responsible and accountable in the defensive end.... and to stick up for our defense, but a lot of times they get hung out because the forwards just don't play smart enough in their own end, don't cover them when they pinch in the offensive end.... we should have 2 guys on the line to prevent an odd man rush, and the defense need to cover each other too, when one pinches the other should stay back just in case.

I think people need to take more pride in their +/- more so then how many goals they score.

Just some thoughts.

Go Flames Go!!

Diverse I agree with everything you suggested.

Additionally we need to be more creative in the O zone. Walking in trying to dangle by skating directly at the other team then losing the puck/slapping it at the net is not going to work.........ever. With the physics engine and poke check effectiveness its very important that when we have the puck we skate AWAY from the other team instead of straight at them hoping baby jesus will allow us to skate on by.

We are at our best when we are moving the puck quickly out of our zone (and not randomly trying to turn around in our zone allowing the opposition to get back on D or having the defenseman decide to carry it into the zone).

I'm going to be drawing up diagrams on all parts of the ice during the Flames game tonight. We need to know what each person should be doing, and is going to be doing if we are going to play at the potential we're capable of. I'll get these posted within the next 72 hours at latest.

Think of the ice like a quadrant.

The right wing plays between the blueline and the bottom of the faceoff circle and right side of the boards to the middle of the ice. The left wing does the same on their side.

The left D plays between the faceoff dot to below the net on the left side. The Right D does the same thing on his side.

The Centre plays where all these points meet, along the same line as the faceoff dots. He transitions into each quadrant as the puck travels, supporting each position to attack the puck, never straying too far from the net.

The offence should also flow through the centre. The breakout ideally starts with the defender passing it to the centre located around the top of the faceoff circles in the middle of the ice to the blueline. From there the centre either attacks with speed or hits a winger only now reaching the redline with speed.

In the offensive zone, if the winger sees a defenseman below the top of the offensive zone faceoff circle, the winger should move to cover that defender's position, at the blueline against the boards waiting to keep a puck in, watching the opposition high forward.

If you just play positional hockey, always keeping yourself between the puck and the net, while staying in your area of play and being mindful of when someone else on your team doesn't (i.e. if the defenceman is pinching in, or if the defenseman or centre is out of position down low), it is fairly easy to beat teams who don't play this way, but have superior scoring skill.

You can draw all the diagrams, and write all the theoretical stuff out.... but there is nothing like having someone lead an open practice session to go over plays. It's the best way to engrain and practice skills.

Lets play some 5 on 5 tonight in practice mode. Not only will it be good practice, but I always found our scrimmages to be a lot of fun (ignoring the times that Chuckie or myself left the club after one of said scrimmages lol). It would be nice for me to practice some of the dekes as well as the checking as I don't want to be trying things for the first time in games that count and costing us a game.
