Quebec school bans talking at lunch
Quote:
Since the start of the school year, the 150 students at École Notre-Dame in Waterloo, Que., have been eating their lunches in silence in the school gymnasium.
For 15 minutes, the only sound permitted, besides the sound of chewing, is the relaxing music played through the school's sound system.
When the 15 minutes are over, the students are allowed to go outside, where they can stretch their vocal cords as they please.

This seems absolutely insane. I could understand wanting to curb loud and boisterous behaviour, but no talking? That is ridiculous. The kids aren't in prison.

Hey
Children should be seen and not heard. And besides its good preperation for when the little felons go to prison.

With all of the advances in social networking like texting and Facebook, we need to eliminate the rest of the opportunities kids have to actually interact with each other.

15 minutes of silence is not going to damage any kid. It might even be good for them.

How about the 6 hours of "silence" when they're in class. This just seems like another opportunity for kids to get in trouble, which is ridiculous
Like I said, I have no problem if kids are screaming and yelling, but having a conversation? It's stupid.

There are situations where I think 15 minutes of silence is totally appropriate.
Imagine the hard walls and floors of a gym and 150 kids talking like mad. The escalation of noise could get deafening if the gym was small enough. We have a company meeting once a year at our CEOs house and if the weather is bad, everyone crammed into his house it turns loud fast.
In a situation like this, you can't really say that everyone needs to talk quietly, because it could be impossible to enforce.

I got in trouble (dragged out of the lunchroom by my ear and yelled at for a solid minute about disrespect) for closing a tupperware container 'too loudly' one time in 4th grade.
I'll never forget trying to keep a serious face as the lunch room lady ripped into me. Oddly enough, she didn't have a job the next day. Woman had issues.
This almost sounds like they're trying to get the kids to meditate or something. Why not do it after eating? I'd nap.

I did some volunteering today with high school kids.
I recall the days of grade 12, and I always thought I was quite the little adult when I was at that age. Seeing the kids today made me realize that 17/18 year olds are children in every sense of the word, and frankly, it's sickening they get an equal vote that I do.
They need to learn some respect, which I'm sure will come in the next few years, but it was shocking.
And they didn't even speak French so...

I don't have a problem with them dying, just with them thinking they're a big man because they're 17/18.
By 25 I realize that the big man doesn't need to broadcast himself as such.

Don't worry, the kids of the people who make those types of decisions are no where close to any fighting!
