You're not going to be able to use a remote desktop client to play a game, remote desktop works because 95% of what's displayed in Windows is either text, or known windows widgets that can be referred to without actually having to send a graphical image.

In a game it would have to send the entire screen image over and over.. which is technically possible but requires either huge bandwidth or great compression or a combination.

But logmein isn't going to let you play an MMO remotely.

Great. Now everybody knows that I don't know what MU stands for. Thanks a lot.

Just got my first itouch... very pumped, and in need of exciting apps. Don't really want to read 66 pages of this thread, so can someone suggest a few of the must have apps for me?

That's all right. Photon doesn't either.

An MU* is a sub-divided acronym relating to a text-based social networking platform. MU stands for MultiUser. The * refers to any of three (possibly more) types of environments:

MUSH = MultiUser Shared Hallucination
MUCK = MultiUser Chat Kingdom
MUD = MultiUser Dimension/Dungeon

Many still exist today, but the lack of a GUI, pure text environment, and elitist expectation by other players that you have an excellent vocabulary and grasp of the English language discourage the average cyber-surfer from participating.

Has anyone tried the My Fantasy Teams app? Someone on a yahoo pool suggested it as a way to manage your team via the iPhone. Any experience with it?

Google does! Unless.. Google's wrong... Which is impossible.

If it's not that MMO (which is the only thing I could think of, at least anything modern, MU* used to refer to really old kinds of game), then you'll have to be more specific.

It's good for managing your team on the go. The free version only allows one team to be managed and you have to click through some ads to get to the interface. It's worth buying if you're going to be using it a lot.

I prefer the Yahoo Football manager app but I doubt they'll be making one for hockey anytime soon.

FYI the NHL Ice time I am talking about was not available on the US/Canada app store. Sorry I was unclear with how I worded it. The app developer Neulion sold the app rights to the Gamecenter Developer. I did not mean the NHL bought out the NHL.

While MU*'s and MMO's are similar environments, what separates the two is the inclusion of a GUI, or lack thereof.

ALL MU*'s rely on text to describe the world, the people around you, the monsters you fight, the objects in your inventory. If graphics are involved, it will be no more than simple embedded JPGs or GIFs. Your interface involves typing commands. Go North. Talk To Elf. Pick Up Scroll. Attack Zombie.

MMO's are on the other extreme. ALL MMO's use graphics to describe the world, the people around you, the monsters you fight, etc. Your interface with the world is performed using a combination of arrow keys and mouse clicks, combined with a text interface for communication purposes with other players only.

I'm looking for an iPad app -- THAT WORKS -- that can allow me to interface with the former. If none exists, I'm looking for an app that will allow me to Remote Desktop my PC via my LAN and open up the MU*client program on my PC remotely.

Posted this in the Election thread, but thought it would be useful here as well:

The City of Calgary just released a free 2010 Election iPhone app for you to download.

Learn who your candidates are, where to vote and much, much more!

Ah ok, not many people still know what a MUD or MUSH (etc) are nowadays (let alone play them!), so I didn't think you were talking about them. I do know the kind of game though, I was a Wizard on a MUD for a while.

There's some clients that come up in a search but no idea if they're any good.. a remote desktop client might work ok, worth a try anyway. My only concern would be the screen of the client might not be seen as text by the remote desktop server and try and pass things over as images.. it shouldn't be that way, but that might be an issue.

For one of my final projects I wrote a distributed MUD server.. you could run parts of the MUD on different servers, and as you walked around when you passed a boundary the server would automagically transfer all the information representing your state in the game to the proper server, seamlessly so you could just wander around jumping from server to server.

So you DO know what a MU* is then. You just assumed I didn't.

Omelette's on both our faces, I suppose. ^__^

I would love a MUD on my phone.

I played many many hours on a MUD before Everquest came out, Dark and Shattered Lands I think it was called.

The always impressive CaptainChuckles created a great little app that will never see the light of the app store.

From our iPhones we're able to search for torrents, select them and have the files download directly to our home computers.

Especially awesome when you're out and about and a friend says, "Hey, have you seen this great independent film that is legally allowed to be shared due to its creative commons license?"

I'm only going to take partial credit for this. During an enjoyable evening with chuckles and mrs. Chuckles I mentioned my problem. I had created a folder in my dropbox and had my bit torrent client monitoring it. That way I could drop a torrent in that folder (and being dropbox I could do that from almost anywhere), and my torrent client at home monitoring the folder would start with the download as soon as I dropped it in.

Problem is that I still had to download the torrent file. Minuscule yes, but still something you don't want to do on a work computer even if it is a legally distributed foreign film, as torrent files just look bad.

I brought this up with chuckles and i could see the gears turning. He realized it could never be an official app, but it was something he could just make for the lulz on his own time. In one day he managed to figure out a way to build an app that drops the .torrent file into your dropbox. Set the client to monitor the proper folder and boom, chuckles' genius is realized.

Without having to read this whole thread (which is impressively long) can someone summarize a good list of must have apps for someone who just purchased an iPhone 4 yesterday, I have never owned an iProduct.

Additionally, I have a 4 yr old boy whom I try to keep distracted on occasion and was hoping I could find games/apps for him. Any suggestions are welcome.

Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja are my go to games when I need to pass time. Great fun for your 4 year old and for yourself, too! Angry birds is $0.99 and is easily the best $0.99 you will ever spend.

In addition to those games, a newer game named Cut the Rope is amongst the best iPhone/iPad games. Also has a lite version for a free trial.
