Post BYOW in Calgary?

On the subject of being cheap…. (I’m poor, who isn’t)

(preamble warning)
The story goes something like this. Recently I made plans for a special evening with my girlfriend and since she loves Italian food I decided to make reservations at an Italian place in order to earn the requisite point total to plough her later…heh

At the time I had been holding on to a particularly delightful bottle of 2006 Merlot from Duckhorn Vinyards in Cali’ and I intended to add it to this special evening in order to add bonus points to my chance for a vigorous session of some serious plough-age.

I needed to make a reservation at a resto’ that would allow me to bring my own wine instead of paying an outrageous sum for a low rate wine of mysterious origins specifically chosen to hide it’s actual value from your typical hobbyist wine-snob. (Side note – I find it amusing when you see a wine you recognize and know full well you could purchase the same thing at the liquor store across the street for 1/3 the price…)

I contacted numerous establishments that I felt were in a similar market – Nikos, Abruzzo, Il Pescatore, Gnocchi, and San Remos to name a few. All of which said no except for one.

Guess who got my business.

Il Pescatore on 17th ave SW near the new LRT station supports BYOW but with a corkage fee. I was really impressed when they decanted my wine.

Long story short, I roughed her up good and I would really like to see more BYOW in Calgary. I know Montreal has several locations that have been doing FREE BYOW for years and the food is still really good.

Does anyone know of any other BYOW resto’s in Calgary?

Catch on Stephen Ave. has a corking fee of $30 IIRC. You can take up to 5 bottles.
