Calgary Civic Election: Ward 6 Discussion
Seriously, who am I supposed to vote for? Just started researching candidates, and a lot of platforms are vague and are pretty generic (Vibrant Calgary much?)
So far, my assesments:
Robert Wills: Appears to be an civic construction inspector working on the west-LRT. This appeals to the SSP reader in me. (YYCengineer for ward6?).
Looks like he is for the airport tunnel and SW ring road. Has 17+ years experience at city hall in various departments (could be a pro or a con).
He also looks very awkward in other pictures
*Shudder
So, whats your take on the candidates?

Other photograpahic assessments of candidates:
Looks like the dad from "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" is running ( John Yannitsos)
And this dude ( Brent Mielke) who is a stay at home dad and bald activist.
Creepy looking WildRoseAlliance guy ( Henry Sims aka Angry Turtleneck dude).
Ken (Kenny) Rogers.....not much to say aside from his odd smile and this tidbit on his page
" I will work for a second westbound entrance/exit to and from Westhills Shopping area onto Highway 8."

Rad Dimic: Yugoslavian by origin, haute-couture enthusiast by night.

Randy Royer: Feathered Hair stylist and published author!
"Randy wrote a book on freedom, democracy and happiness" Excellent!

Richard Pootmans: His name is Pootmans? Seriously? I likely recognize him from his "Just for Men: Salt 'n Peppa" billboards. In addition, this official campaign photo looks like a magazine ad for Viagra (just sayin')

Tom Malyszko; He is against the airport tunnel and peace bridge. He is an IP lawyer and #1 smiler in the ward.

My impression is the Brent Mielke is the best candidate.

Pootmans sent out a flyer where he is dressed in an old giant sweatshirt and jeans that are rolled oddly. Seriously, if you can't take the time to dress up for campaign photos, I'm going to have to disqualify you from the ballot. I had looked a while ago at the candidates and there were only 3 at the time. Now there are a bunch. Let me know what you find out Ducay, the websites I looked at didn't have much substance.

He reminds of this candidate for MLA in the last election:
What outstanding organizations he supported!

These are the candidates?
How did Ward 6 manage to get the cream of the crop from society at large to all simultaneously run for one office in one ward in Calgary?
I do not envy your having to choose from that broad swath of obvious career politicians, fine residents of Ward 6!

I'm having the same problem. I went through all the candidate websites, and there wasn't much to choose from. I might be leaning slightly towards Mielke on the basis of past experience as a community association president and a bit more of his platform on his website than the others, but his platform is still really short on specifics and doesn't say where he stands on any major issues. Pootmans also seems to have some relevant experience, but even less substance to his platform than Mielke. Royer has a some semi-relevant experience too, but something about him just doesn't feel right to me (maybe it's just the hair). Most of the others don't seem to have either much in the way of qualifications or any real platforms.

After reading through everyone's pages in search of hilarious photos my actual assesment is
Mielke: Doesn't really have that much experience that will translate to city hall. Vague on his positions and overall odd vibe from his website: revised Maybe?
Sims: His pamphlet that came to my house had like 10pt spacing between lines. Reminded me of high school when I was trying to make a 1 page assignment look like 6 pages. Pass
Yannitsos: Jury is still out on the dude, not seeing all that much that draws me to him.
Dimic: Not getting much of anything from him: Pass
Royer: Looks like he has good experience and knowledge that may translate to city hall. Maybe
Pootmans: Despite the name, might have a chance. Maybe
Wills: Knows city hall as mentioned, unsure of how that'd translate to aldermanic. Maybe
Tom: Reminds me of a mix of McIver and Rob Anders. Pass

Randy Royer should be tarred and feathered for the amount of sign spam he's putting out there. Simply disgusting.

Yeah, dude must have bucks. I like when they blow their wad putting 8 signs in one place and then you don't see any anywhere else. I think their volunteers just said "eff it, let's throw these here and go home."

Mielke was my horse in this race, until McIver's donor list came out. Mielke is one of the earlier entries.

^Well he did also attend Nenshi's campaign kickoff/fundraiser party, for what it's worth. I think he donated to McIver sometime back in '09. I think a lot of people did and now have chosen someone else to support, if not run against him themselves (Connelly).
One thing about Ward 6 is that they haven't had a good alderman for awhile. Burrows then Connelly. Hopefully that trend is reversed.

He must be new, I don't recall him at all. I met Brent Mielke at this summers Wildrose Stampede BBQ. Not that, that means anything....just sayin'.

People are different when it comes to municipal politics.
People who have donated to my campaign have also contributed to McIver, Higgins or Nenshi.

It's not like we do much better provincially (Liepert) or federally (Anders).

I still blame all the old people in Glenbrook, Westgate, Rosscarrok, etc for our consistently shetty representation. Just goes to show how much power they hold to continually elect the worst candidates possible.
Makes me glad those communities are starting to undergo even more rapid gentrification.

Ha Ken Rogers is my Uncle,
Good guy for sure in person, I am not in Ward 6 so his stands or anything mean nothing to me.
