Thanks for all the great advice. I've basically decided on this one
http://store.apple.com/ca/product/FC...co=MTkwMjMyMzA
after all the refurb talk. It's 50 bucks more than the basic "new" one but has a better processor, twice the HDD and a better graphics card. I plan on getting the applecare so I don't mind about the warranty.
Also, apologies for all the typos etc...was using an iphone.

Quick question regarding MBP warranty.
If I open it up and modify some stuff, will that void the warranty?
If so, can I just re-modify it back to the original condition before sending it off to Apple if I ever need to use the warranty?

I'm pretty sure that Apple considers the hard drive and RAM to be "user-serviceable" parts. In other words, swapping out those two things should not void your warranty. At least on the unibody models, anyway.

I heard that you can replace the CD drive with an SSD, which is what I'm planning to do if I do get a MBP. But I'm not sure if I would risk it if my $2500 investment wasn't protected by warranty.

What do Mac users do for files larger than 4 GB (e.g. disc ISOs)? I know you can install NTFS support but I'm assume there's a better way.

I'm running parallels right now, but I'd recommend Boot Camp and will be switching over soon. Parallels has poor USB support (although the newer versions may be better).
I've got a USB/OBDII that I'm trying to get working and the software is only in the Microsoft World.

I woudl recomend searching the forums for some really good tips about using apple. No need to repeat here.
I find the trackpad has completley replaced my mouse, I don't even have one near my computer.
Another thought when setting up is to make dropbox your home folder when you are setting up so that all your important stuff is always backed up and offsite.
Also, if you are a corporate guy, given your nickname, look into buying software through your employer. I bouth MS Office for Mac for $11 through work.
Ihave really liked my Mac in the two years since I switched.

I've done this. Well, actually I put the SSD in the main drive location and a 500GB drive in the optical bay, but it's probably better the other way around since the main drive bay has better shock absorption.
As I understand it, that mod only voids the warranty on the parts affected - the CD drive. The SATA controller should still be covered as Apple allows hard disk swaps in the main drive bay and this is no different.
I wouldn't sent it in for service with the mod though - just undo it, there's no way for them to tell it's been done if you return the superdrive in there.

Sweet, was it hard to modify it? I heard you need to get a tray that fits where the cd drive is to mount the SSD.

Yes, you need a drive bay for it.
I ordered mine from newmodeus, it had a bezel on it that I had to remove but apparently they've got one without the bezel on it now:
http://newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?...roducts_id=259
Note I've got a 2010 MBP with SATA, they used to have PATA. Make sure you get the right one.
A tad pricey considering what it is, but the cheapest one I found that wasn't just garbage. I would have paid twice that to add a second drive to my MBP.

MAC noob here. Our family has just been given an older iMac. Been playing with it for a few days and I gotta say I like it. I have a question about Internet security. I have it residing behind behind a NAT firewall. I've heard all about how Macs aren't really susceptible to viruses, etc. That said, do any of you run anti-virus and/or firewall software? If so, what do you recommend?

The best virus protection will always be smart Internet usage. Fairly true on PC, a little more true on Mac just because it isn't a big target for the people who create viruses. Stick to reputable porn and you should be ok.

Seconded. The person in front of the keyboard is always the biggest security threat to any system no matter the OS.
Congrats on your decision. The iMacs are pretty great systems. I am seriously considering switching to Apple when it is time to retire my current PC.
