A movie about social media, or course social media will be used to pump out good review after good review!

Yes, clearly a world-wide media conspiracy is the only explanation.

Not a conspiracy but just bias. Facebookers and Twits (which is most of the media these days) will want this movie to do well.

Because Zuckerberg et al are totally behind the movie.
It's Fincher and Sorkin, it'll be good.

It's a movie directed by the guy who directed Seven, Fight Club, Zodiac and Benjamin Button... and it's written by the guy who wrote A Few Good Men, Malice, Sports Night, The West Wing and Studio 60.
I think your paintbrush might be a little thick on this one.

A good movie would have been fine... movie of the year? That's rich.
Go see it and find out

Michael J Fox called. He'd like his time machine back please.
Also, see the movie or don't see the movie, just don't act like those who do are somehow less aware than you are. That really just undermines whichever point it is you're trying to make.

What? I'm just calling the media biased. This seems to have upset you.

Yes, Peter Travers of Rolling Stone magazine is really just a biased Facebooker and not at all a respected critic who was writing reviews decades before social media existed. And Variety is just some hack reviewer's blog, not the most important film industry publication.

You can call the media whatever you want. I'm just saying there are ways of doing it without using a paintbrush.

The Variety review you linked was very good and very fair.
But again when you see earlier reviews with quotes like "It's better than the movie of the year." that's just overhypeness.

While I agree in principle it seems your argument has shifted. First it was about Facebookers and Twitter-ers pimping this movie, not the MSM

My God, the idiocy here. "I'm not a fan of facebook"?? So you refused to see Apocalypse Now because you didn't support the war in Vietnam? The Godfather turned you off because you're not a mafia fan? You never saw Alien because you can't cheer for monsters?
People, you don't see a film that is a critical inspection of a cultural phenomenon because you LIKE (or AVOID) the phenomenon.

They're kind of the same these days. Especially the great reviews shown here.
The Variety piece was great, there just aren't enough of them.

What's idiotic about it? Those are all valid reasons not to see those movies.
And if it's directed at me, where did I say I dislike facebook?

How about not seeing it because it's a stupid idea for a movie? It's embarrassing to our culture that it's getting as much attention as it is.
A movie about Facebook. Think about that. A movie...About Facebook. That's idiocy.

Do you know anything about 'story'? It's actually pretty interesting. How is it any different from say, oh I dunno, There Will Be Blood and Oil? We live in a Tech driven culture, of course you're going to see movies like this.

I agree. A movie about facebook is cool because it's the current phenomenon.
Movies are an avenue for creativity about everything, historical or current.

I'm looking forward to it, but the extremely positive early reviews are something I didn't expect.

You guys know that it's not a movie about Facebook, right?
It's not a documentary about how to add people to your friends list or post pictures that nobody wants to see. It's the background story of how the whole thing was created, and it's actually a pretty interesting story. The movie could be about the concept of paint drying on a wall somewhere, but if the same background events happened while that paint was drying, it would be a pretty interesting story too.
I can't stand gangsters or mobsters or even guns in general, but I sure loved The Godfather. I couldn't care less about Facebook either, but the story (as I understand it) is something that interests me a great deal.
Again, see it or don't see it. That obviously has no impact on me. I'm just saying this whole cultural highground thing is nothing more than misguided elitism.
Edit: Also, the reviews I posted in this thread all came from the Rotten Tomatoes website. They are the "T-Meter" reviews, meaning that they are some of the top critics in the industry. These aren't just random bloggers.

Movies based on true stories are stupid ideas. Like 21, Pirates of Silicon Valley, Titanic, Goodfellas, Donnie Brasco, Black Hawk Down...
