McIvor's donor list now published: http://www.ricmciver.ca/wp-content/u...24Sept2007.pdf
As expected, pretty much every developer and homebuilder is on it - but surprisingly most are under the maximum (though the owners could also have made individual donations). Much more corporate support when compared to Nenshi's list.

And entry #692 - The Calgary Police Association. Wonder why Hanson went after Nenshi.

So does all this corporate support basically mean "Blinky" is going to win? I can't stand the guy but it seems like he's got the money to buy the position. I'm disappointed to return from vacation to see Hehr has dropped out but perhaps this will help consolidate the none Blinky vote.

Also the Calgary firefighters association.
Someone needs to tell Carma of the $5,000 limit as they are well over it.

If campaign signs are any indication McIvor has the Hamptons locked up. No Nenshi signs anywhere to be seen as of yesterday. At least its carma and not Karma donating money to dr no

I was in Bel-Air and a few various places in Ward 11 today and didn't see any of his, but quite a few Nenshi signs on lawns there. I think that I saw one for Higgins.
It might be closer than what that poll last week had it at after this past week. I think that Nenshi is fast becoming the place for the ABM vote to go to. If only Joe Connelly would run a little harder and split the vote it could get really interesting!
On McIvers donor list there are a few interesting names...a few running for aldermanic positions now, and Allan Hallman (now Higgins campaign manager). The business support isn't too surprising given that he is a front runner and it was well known that he was going to run. Overall it just looks like they've done a good job of going to the well (as in hitting their donors consistently and received money from the same people over and over) and finding new ones. I didn't add anything up or anything like that, but nothing jumped out at me as being too egregious?
Quite a war-chest built over the last few years though. Anyone total that list up?

^Yup. Half of the list (not sure what portion of the total dollar amount) had donated before any other candidate had declared (minus maybe Lord), and over a third of the list donated before 2010.

I don't think Hason went after Nenshi - the position of the CPS is that they will wait and talk about their budget with the next mayor.
And in my mind that's fair.

Craig Chandler is like political Draino. Your campaign is down the toilet with his public endorsement.

So why the press release from Hanson saying facts given by Nenshi were inaccurate, then when asked "how so?" he didn't want to say?
Either stay mum or enter into the debate. Don't enter into the debate by issuing a press release and then say you don't want to.

The information presented by Mr. Nenshi is inaccurate.
We are very proud of the fact that we continue to police this city with one of lowest police-to-population ratios in all of Canada.
Calgarians can be assured that they not only enjoy arguably one of the safest cities in this country, but it is done so in a very cost effective and efficient manner.
Respectfully, to insinuate any different is not only ill-informed, but also irresponsible.
|
I guess "went after" can be taken differently based on aggressiveness. But it's clear that Nenshi was targeted by this release.

I thought it was foolish to go after the police budget during the election. There are plenty of other departments to look at once in office. It makes sense to find low hanging fruit to look fiscally prudent, but a quick comparison against our neighbour to the north would say our costs aren't completely out of line.

I think it was a bad choice by Nenshi to go after the CPS. Since Hanson took over he's added more beat cops and by most reports it's had the desired impact.
We can talk about long-term visions for the city and other things but one of the main things people care about is that their families are safe.
It's my belief that Hanson is one of the most, if not THE most respected public figure in this city.
Does that mean his department is above questioning? Not at all. But it's the wrong battle for Nenshi to be picking.

I'm not arguing the merits of the political strategy, I was simply pointing out that the press release from the police chief directly targeted Nenshi.

I guess I feel he was forced into some sort of response by Nenshi's original comments.
Do we know if Nenshi called CPS before he went public to try and ask his questions and get a response?
I think it was poorly handled by the Nenshi camp and forced the CPS to issue some sort of response and in that sense I think they managed it as best they could, without wading too deeply into the political waters.
