Interesting that the media has now defined the frontrunners as McIver, Higgins and Nenshi.
http://www.calgaryherald.com/frontru...631/story.html
CBC has also done so in its articles regarding the race.

Edit: nevermind, my brain was off. Obviously you meant excluding Nenshi from that list as the other option. That would be really foolish if they did, especially considering the momentum he has maintained over the last couple weeks.

Its not that vague though. He also outlines ideas to streamline the application/funding process. That would get money to the people it needs to get to in a timely manner. Far from just paying lip-service to the issue!

Anything that suggests studying something before determining the proper course of action is vague by its very nature. It is stating that he doesn't know, and he doesn't think anyone else knows, exactly what to do in regards to the issue. What it is clear about is that it is a priority and that he understands that he doesn't know what needs to be done, but he will do what he can to find out.
I would rather someone tell me they don't know something than fill me full of something they think I want to hear.

Well I don't think that anyone knows exactly what to do to eliminate poverty, so that makes perfect sense.
The other points of the policy release are actually straight-forward though. He explains how unnecessary it is to re-apply for something that is already working and explains how he would like to streamline things. So while he would take the time to study the unknowns here, he is delivering on that other major section.

I love how there are two votes for Oscar Fech.
Today at the Kerby Centre Mayoral Forum he proclaimed that the mayor's office has threatened assassination against him.
For those that don't know, this guy shows up to every single public hearing to yammer on about nonsense. He was banned for some time I believe from speaking at council, but he's been back lately.

I've always thought it was kinda funny to see communist candidates like Bonnie Divine. Wouldn't plotting the violent overthrow of City Council followed by the execution of the wealthy be more along the lines of her strategy points.

Ah, but the reason why this new announcement has now pushed me into the realm of decided voter is because he acknowledges that he views it's in the city's mandate to 'eliminate poverty.' I vote against increased income redistribution at the provincial and federal level, and I do at the civic level too. Sure there are things that he can do from a legislative perspective that can ease the burden on the city's poor, like legalizing secondary suites and streamlining existing processes, and I support him all the way on such things, but a lot of the other points mentioned in his backgrounder I imagine will come at increased cost.
Nenshi won't mean lower taxes, any hypothetical savings garnered from 'smart growth' vs. 'sprawl' will be ploughed into programs that real conservatives view as not being a responsibility of government.

Actually nowhere in his policy release does he say "eliminate poverty". He does see it in the purvue of the City to help in reducing poverty and increase opportunities by a number of means. Doesn't seam unreasonable at all.
Also, there's nothing at all hypothetical about savings from improved growth patterns.

Jeebus, just turned on "view signatures" after a year long hiatus....forgot how much it makes the forum look like the classifieds.
