Pirelli P-Zero Neros would be my choice.

^thanks; I had narrowed it down to 3 choices, and that was one of them.
my other two choices are Bridgstone Potenza and Yokohama AVID ENVigor. Price difference is negligible. The Pirelli's have a 45000 mile warrenty, the other two have 50000 and 60000 mile warrenties, respectively.

Why are the Pirelli's your choice?

The Pirelli's are W rated, as are the Yokos, the Bridgestones are only H or V, so you wont get the same speed rating. To be honest any of these tires would be fine. I have Pirelli's on my current vehicle and I'm very happy with them. My buddy ran a set of P-Zero Neros all year round and he was pleased with them.

			P-Zero Neros are completely underwhelming.
P-Zero Rossos are very grippy, but have poor tread ware.

Michelin Pilot Sports are amazing but $$$$.

Toyo T1-Rs are really good tires for the price point (mid range).

Continental Sport Contacts are alright, but got left in the dust a bit this generation.

He's confined to needing some snow traction. My ideal tire is the Pilot Sports, I had them on my old Firebird, they were amazing.

Then he shouldn't be considering anything mentioned in this thread.

Go with the Conti winters. They're priced reasonably but performance-wise are near the top of the pack.
I can give you more info if you are interested, fire me a PM.

to be clear, not looking for Winter tires; just all-seasons that can deal with the occasional snow storm
the Michelin Pilot Sports looked interesting, but for an extra $35/tire, its a bit much

Not to mention they are pretty much a 0 on snow traction.

I just bought some Motomaster AT's that were on sale at CT on Saturday, I'm quite happy with.

How about the pilot sport a/s? Basically an all season version of the pilot sport--not very good in the snow from what I hear, but might be good enough for the occasional snow you get.
I have a set on my car, although I am getting winters since the car will be in Calgary this winter.

These should give you a nice high performance tire with still a bit of all season capability. I got mine at Costco last year, not sure if they have them in the states.

Does this thread signal that it’s time for the yearly CP debate on the merits of snow tires in Calgary?
Highlights I always look forward to:
 - stories of freaked out drivers who have no place driving in the winter at all, snow tires or not
 - stories of hapless motorists you saw stuck on the side of the road because they didn’t have snow tires
 - stories of hapless motorists buried in ditches because they did have snow tires and drove too fast
 - stories of cities that have better snow removal programs than Calgary
 - links to weird Euro videos of people driving up endless snow-packed hills
 - the overriding sense of condemnation surrounding every winter driver not behind the wheel of your own vehicle

These are just some of the many things I love as we head into the winter season, and it’s just another sign that hockey is just around the corner.

We're talking performance tires, winter tire snobs can wait a month or so for that thread to magically appear |

does anyone have nitrogen inflated tires? I understand the theory behind it, but is it really worth $5 a tire?

Its mostly a cash grab, with some marginal benefits.

Unless you're a long haul trucker I'd skip the nitrogen. Unless of course you like green valve caps then I say go for it!!

many cars/tires have TPMS sensor. One tire place claims that moisture in compressed air will negatively affect the sensor.
