Energy Efficient light bulbs are poisoning us?
Saw this link on a friends facebook page. Yes, I'm sorry it's FB, but I could not find the CBC story anywhere else.

Led light bulbs are the future anyway. They are more efficient and less toxic than CFLs .

I have a link I'll post it when I get home.
I think the wavelength of stuff they're talking about would need an antenna 42km long to pick up a good portion of the energy, but I'll have to check my math on that.

Are they more efficient? The brighter ones have heat sinks on them, CFLs don't, which kind of tells me LEDs are less so, but I don't know the details and can't look it up now. Anyone else know?

I'm looking forward to the time when LED fixtures are a viable option for household use. Right now they're still pretty expensive, but so were CFLs when they first came out.

I noticed at the light bulb store that they are selling those LED lights. My issue is how expensive they are and from memory they were twice the price of compact florescent. I like LED because mosquitoes apparently can't see the light they emit.
As well, why by a product that contains mercury knowing full well that there is an alternative that does the same thing without the addition of this element and hazard to the environment? One mercury filled light bulb may not be a lot but a million bulbs would be a different story.
Thanks for the predictable wifi jokes and "run for the hills" sarcasm. As expected you came through, all 7 watts of you.

I'm sitting in an office lit entirely by LED bulbs right now. We used to have 10 - 50 watt GU10 halogens in here, now we have 10 - 3 watt LED bulbs. It not quite as bright in here, but it is bright enough. Also, we don't have to run the air conditioning nearly as much, because we don't have 500w of waste heat.

I prefer office lighting to be dimmer anyway. Indirect window light plus a desk lamp is all that I need. Even at home I'm more of a lamp person instead of lighting up the entire room as it just feels more comfortable that way for me. Obviously not everyone can dictate the amount and type of lighting in their office, but I'll take anything over the big, office-style fluorescent tube fixtures.
Do you have any more info about the GU10 LED lights that you have? Brand, cost, etc.? I have some track lighting in the basement that has some GU10 halogens that I'd like to convert, but as of yet the selection and price point haven't hit that sweet spot for me.

Well, I for one certainly feel poisoned. Is that a good enough excuse to go home?
