Charges of libel, obstruction against Cgy website operator

CALGARY - RCMP have laid five charges against a Calgary man related to the operation of a website highly critical of Calgary police officers.

This is pretty stupid on the RCMP's part. There's no reason to elevate some guy you can dismiss as a nutter into a cause celebre.

A nutter he may be, but his own website says he was warned twice against making defamatory statements over two years ago. A very quick read of the site indicates this man insists anyway. Looks to me like he is fitting his own noose.

And as far as the RCMP goes, there is nothing stupid on their part. They receive a criminal complaint, they investigate, then turn over to the crown. I'd be more concerned if they *didn't* investigate a complaint.

John Kelly, 53, is accused of interfering with an active homicide investigation and was charged with four counts of libel and obstruction of justice after he allegedly posed as a paralegal and approached the mother of a 2003 homicide victim saying he could help her sue police.

My understanding was that Libel was not a criminal offense. If the CPS is unhappy, shouldn't they sue the man in question, just like any normal citizen would do?

The article says they are rare, but they must be a part of the criminal code if they charged him with it.

Surprisingly, he doesn't roast him. I wonder if this guy has a smidge of ligitamacy because of association with Hehr, or if he's still just a conspiracy theorist?

I was genuinely curious what information he has but simply can't read his site. It's too painful on the eyes. Just once I'd like to see one of these anti-police or anti-establishment or conspiracy theorist nuts be able to cohesively lay out their arguments and evidence on moderately well designed website.
