Los Angeles Angels?

Dumb question but I don't follow baseball, so when did the Anaheim Angels change their name to Los Angeles Angels? Don't they still play in Anaheim? Why confuse themselves with the Dodgers?

They are now known as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Changed the name at the start of the season, and nobody really knows why.

The new owners wanted a broader appeal, and they think that having Los Angeles in their name will be more attractive and attention grabbing on the national scene (for TV, advertisers, etc) than Anaheim.

for some reason this thread reminds me of our family trip to Dodgers stadium in 1984

My mom (in her usual loud mom voice) asks in the middle of the cheap seat bleachers "who are the Los Angeles Dodgers? I only know the Brooklyn Dodgers...did they move?"

I think the name is funny only because "Los Angeles" translates directly to "The Angels".

So in a full English name, they're The The Angels Angels of Anaheim.

Next year they will be the Rancho Cucamonga Angels of Anaheim.

The Los Angeles Angels was the name of the old PCL team before the Dodgers moved west, so they're honoring their history. The other L.A. PCL team was the Hollywood Stars which had Chuck Connors [of Rifleman fame] playing first base.

It was also the original name of the Angels when the AL expanded.

IIRC, the Angels changed to the California Angels when they moved to their permanent home in Anaheim, to differentiate themselves from the Dodgers. Then they changed to Anaheim, for no reason in particular, and finally back to Los Angeles because of the money potential.
