Default Samsung BD-P1600

I've had my Bluray player for almost 2 years now, and I've only really updated the firmware on it once, with the disc that came in the box. Just for a a frame of reference, this was the Bluray player that came out a while back with 'The Dark Knight' as a throw in.

We've had absolutely no problems with it, up until reciently. It's skipping on some parts, and not loading other discs. I've been trying to install the latest Firmware (2.12) to the unit, with no success. I've tried two CDs, and USB once with the same message that "Update data is damaged" or something like that.

Does anyone have this Bluray player? Any issues? Anyone know where I can find previous versions of Firmware?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Bluray... and yes.

EDIT: Updating a player's firmware makes more sense than having to go out and buy the newest thing, cause your outdated player is no longer compatable. There's no difference between a Blueray's updates, and a PS3, iPod, etc's updates.

I used to have the BDP-1500 and bricked it by doing a firmware update improperly about six months ago. (Apparently the USB key I had wasn't completely blank before I put the firmware on it and it caused the whole thing to lock up unrecoverably.

I picked up the BDC-6500 and now do updates by Wi-Fi. Way better!

^^ Blu-ray Updates are often necessary to play newer movies as they come out with new 'features'.

Yeah... the BD-P1600 doesn't have onboard Wifi... you have to spend like $70 for the adaptor, which I'm not willing to do right now. I'm a week away from having it hardwired to internet, but it's still being a pain in the ass.

As for my USB, I don't think there's a way for me to completely wipe the one I have out. It always has an autorun file on it. I've tried to format it before, maybe I didn't do one more step.

Could it be the fact that I'm using CDs over DVDs that the firmware isn't working?

I just thought of something stupid, but could it be cause I downloaded Firmware from Samsung.com, and not Samsung.ca?

EDIT: Went through the .ca site, and it sent me to the .com site for the firmware upgrade.

How are you burning the CD? Data or image? I pretty sure if you just throw the file onto the CD or DVD it won't work, you have to burn it as an image. Hope that makes sense.

I have used both Nero and Alcohol to burn image, one disc each. No success.

EDIT: To clearify... downloaded, burned image with Alcohol, nothing. Re-downloaded, burned image with Nero, nothing. Downloaded USB Firmware, copied to USB, same issue.

I'm almost wondering if I needed to upgrade along the way or something. Just can't figure this out.

I know I burned the wrong disc type once so I thought I would throw that out there. I assume you are following the directions from the website or manual. I know with my Samsung Blu-ray player (older than yours) that it can be really slow to do everything, but if you are getting an error then it's not that. You could also take your Blu-ray player and plug it into your computer monitor and router and try to update that way. I did it once with mine and it worked, but it was painfully slow.

Yeah... I may just move it closer to somewhere that I can hardwire. Or wait a few days until the ethernet cable I have close to it is finally connected.

Just researching everything online too, sounds like Samsung is horrible for their Firmware updates. Good thing my players is under one year old, and I still have my reciept. Now I'm not as frightened to try and get this thing figured out.

If you have to burn it as an image - use IMGBURN.

It is by far the best software to burn IMG,ISO,BIN/CUE files.

And it is free.

I haven't had any problems burning any other ISO with the programs I've already tried, and I don't think I want to waste another CD to get this done. I think I'm just going to wait until ethernet cord is hooked up and ready to go.

If there's a silver lining to the story, I just realized that it's still under warranty. Got it last Christmas, not the year before. Reciept in hand. If the firmware update doesn't work, I'll just send it out for repair.
