I think that's a really good deal.

Yeah, for $2 you get 5.5 GB more than me, 50 fewer minutes but add in the 100 LD minutes. And you are geeky enough that you might get some use out of that data plan.

In terms of data, last cycle i was given the promo of unlimited data for some months. so i tried to use as much as i could last billing cycle, streaming tethering etc. Let people do all their data usage with it lol
I still only hit 1.5GB's.

Decided to give Shaw a call and discuss going to Telus for internet, as I was paying the standard non-bundled full price, almost $50/month for regular hi-speed. Ended up with $9.95/month for extreme hi speed for a year. Saved almost $480 for the year.
Then called Bell about my TV bill, not as much success. Gave me the choice of either 1 year free PVR rental or about $12/month off my bill, took the cash since my current PVR is still good. Not great, but another $144 bucks saved for the year.

Wow, how did you manage that? Telus has been so stingy with their retention deals. Really good deal.

Asked them how much it was to cancel early
Asked them what I steps I have to take to transfer my phone number
They asked why I was switching
Told them what another provider was offering and they matched it

Just got off the phone with BellTV (again) and ended up getting NHLCI & NFLST with $150 off the regular price. So I'm getting both for $269, so in the end I'm paying $69 for NHLCI.

I called Shaw too thanks to this thread and got $80 per month off my bill for a year and then about $35 off per month once the year is up. I am thrilled with the money saved, especially considering it only took a 30 min phone call. Thanks CP!

Just checked my shaw bill, and it seems like i'm getting an even better deal!
They charged me $60 (instead of the the $80ish I though they were going to when I renegotiated), and I still get the following
- Shaw extreme internet
- Full HD package
- Free long distance (for a year)
All for $60! No idea why its cheaper then what we negotiated but I'm not complaining. Going to be interested to see what next months bill is. So I'm essentially getting 50% off now w/ free long distance.

How much was your monthly cost originally? That's a great deal!
I called them too, and they gave me $50 per month off on a $120 bill, and one month free. Unfortunately, this is only for 13 months, and then after that it'll revert to the regular price, meaning I have another phone call in a year to deal with.

So I called and my old plan was the 100 for everything package. I was being ripped off! Thanks CP! I managed to get this, although reading this I'm now getting greedy would like 1000 long distance:
300 mins
Evenings starting at 6
Visual/Unlimited Voicemail
Talk5 w/unlimited LDistance to those callers
6GB Data w/tethering
Call Display
And I was due for an upgrade in November as my 2 years was up, she allowed me to upgrade early to a new phone for the 3 year price. And waived my upgrade fee. For example I can get the new Galaxy for 150, or the iPhone4for 160. Now, time to decide...I'm leaning to the Samsung, it's a damn sweet phone!

Do you have more leverage if you have a pre-existing smart phone?
I've got 2 basic 4 year old cell phone plans with Telus (for me and my wife). I'd like to get a couple Iphones/plans but it seems like you only benefit if you already have an Iphone and an existing plan.

My wife just picked up an iPhone 4 yesterday at the mall at one of the Telus dealers. She's been sick of her BB and been wanting to switch. She kept all her features while switching to the Student 55 plan, so all she ends up paying for is $55/month for a tonne of stuff and 1GB of data, but yes she did end up re-upping for another 3 yrs.
So, for $55/month she gets:
200 anytime mins
1GB data
Canada-wide roaming with Telus for free (I think that's standard now)
Got rid of her SAF
Unlimited talk & text nationwide with 10 numbers
Unlimited Texting
Unlimited talk after 6pm
Voicemail 10
Caller ID & Call Forwarding

What exactly does that mean? I ask because it sounds like something a mall sales person would say; vague enough that you could interpret it wrong.
For example, if he means that when you travel to another province you won't pay a roaming fee on text, data, and local calls- then yes. That has been in place since the 90's.
But if they mean that if she is in Toronto, and her friend in Calgary dials her local Calgary number- I would get that part in writing that it is included. My guess- it isn't. But the wording sounds good.

Pretty sure its free calling (calling only, not text) to other lines that are under the same account, even if its long distance.

Back to Shaw, thanks to those who reminded me to call them, and, thanks to Telus for having competitve offers to push Shaw into action.
Called and put right through to loyalty (been with Shaw for 9+ years). Told them had no issue with service, but Telus would save me a bundle of money. Didn't even have to tell them the Telus offer, and he started typing away.
Ended up saving $75 a month for a year...exact same services (cable, full HD, no movies, with Extreme Internet), hand ave to switch home phone from Telus to Shaw, and told him I have a cheap plan $20+$5 CID/VM that I netgotiated with Telus. He said no worries, and came up with the overall price, and got 1 year long distance. Not sure the breakdown per month for each service, but when someone's going to save you half your bill, you take it.
After that, reverts to regular pricing, which is still $15 less then what I am paying now...but the guy was upfront and said after 6 months of paying the regular rate, call back and they'll give a reduced rate for the next 6 months...and so on. Found that interesting. Said that Shaw was trying to implement a loyalty system outgoing, so long time customers didn't have to call in (I call BS, but whatever).
Anyways, very accomodating, as Shaw has been (except for their scheduling of service calls in our case) the entire time been with them. Very easy call, pleasant CSR and no haggling. Got a time for them to come in and setup the phone and then we'll be setup. He even gave me his ID in case when the first bill came, it wasn't exactly as he said.
Edit: Forgot to say, he also threw in free HD PVR rental for 2 years. We already have one but could certainly use a second box. New Motorola boxes, out I guess just in the past few weeks. Said the Pace ones were a big issue and moving away from those. And can then purchase for $150 in a year, although he hinted the free rental would likely continue too. So, can add another $10 savings per month, so saving about $85 a month for 12 months.
So if you're a long time Shaw customer, just call and mention you've got an offer from Telus you are considering. Again, no need to threaten to cancel, or demand anything and you should get some form of tangible savings, without having to change a thing from whatever you're getting.
