I was told before that "affect" should be used as a verb and "effect" should be used as a noun.
However, someone pointed out to me a while ago that it is not always the case, but if you stick that general rule, you probably won't mix them up as much.
The one that always bugs me is "anyways". It just doesn't make sense in most contexts to make the word "anyway" into a plural word.

^ That was me... maybe, I know I've mentioned it on this board.
In general affect is a verb, but there is a specific, medical/psychological use as a noun where 'affect' = expressive demeanour. "Joe has a flat affect, meaning his body language and facial expressions show no emotion."
Similarly, effect is generally a noun, but it can be used as a a verb occasionally. One may 'effect' a change to a situation by doing something to it. "Studying for the exam allowed him to effect an improvement in his result."
However, in normal usage, affect is always a verb, and effect is almost always a noun and you'll rarely screw up follwing that guideline.

My woman pronounces Milk "Malk" and Pillow "Pallow."
For some reason I can't say Onion the right way, if I conciously make an effort I can, but if I'm just saying it it comes out Un-gion....idiosyncracies are funny.

Exactly. If anyone has trouble remembering which is which, just think of them in alphabetical order. You affect something, and the result is the effect.

A lot of posters on this board have no clue how to use apostrophe's properly.

If one is allowed to use effect as a verb, are the Fan960 hosts allowed to “effort guests”? Who gate-keeps the verbing of words?

The use of effect as a verb is correct, it has a specific meaning that isn't always easy to communicate using alternate wording, although it is seen as pretentious in many cases.
I do agree that there is a tendency out there to 'verbify' words that shouldn't be, but this one isn't an example of that, it's been used in this way for a long time. And yes, I know I just 'verbified' verb....
