He doesn't need to "make a scene". Either he or his handlers could've resolved his being ignored by bringing it to the attention of one of the organizers. If he did so, and was ignored, then he should bitch about it.

This is ridiculous. Is Barb Higgins' campaign running in high school? But hilarious that twitter can remedy the situation so quickly:

I'm going with Nenshi for now, but I'm not firm about it yet. His platform seems to have the most common sense and actual solutions in it. Ultimately, platitudes won't solve our problems, only actual action will.

^ Interesting. You'd think with 21 years of TV experience, she'd be up for some public speaking opportunities. But I suppose a debate is less scripted than the nightly TV news. But then, so is running the city...
Be interesting to see if she accepts or not. It might be a good idea for her to accept, because it kind of establishes in peoples minds that "these are the two frontrunners, which do I like better."

It's kind of hard not to accept, isn't it? She basically has to or it just looks terrible on her.
Kind of a gamble by Nenshi as well since who is he to just challenge people to a one on one debate in a an election consisting of 15 candidates?

From what Nenshi wrote about his challenge to Barb, is that he views himself and her as the two frontrunners that are not part of the current council. So for all those people that don't want an insider in the mayors seat this is a chance to hear the two big outsiders debate.

Seemingly missing in action lately: Joe Connelly. No major announcements, quotes or online presence for awhile. Will he be the first to drop out of the race?

I think to ultimately win he needs to gamble and come out ahead. From reading the papers, listening to radio, watching local news, etc. it seems that if you're from a demographic that isn't paying attention to alternative media you would get the impression that the race comes down to Barb Higgins vs. Ric McIvor. He wants to establish himself as the challenger to Ric McIvor by proving that Higgins is unfit to be mayor with enough time in the campign to tar and feather McIvor as representing the old dysfunctional council.

Alnoor Kassam was also hinting at rumors of his leaving the mayor race, but Connelly has denied it. He's such a small potato guy compared to the others in the race.
My girlfriend is in LUPP and deals with a lot of East Springbank, so she's always dealing with him and gets really frustrated because he tells her and her group one thing, but then completely changes his tune to the public or at CPC.

Its not a gamble by Nenshi at all. Basically everyone knows this is a race between McIver and Higgins. Guys in the other tier of 15 need to get the top two to pay attention to them and acknowledge them to actually be part of the race. If she accepts its a huge win for Nenshi, and he's in the race automatically. Higgins has some people around her who are smarter than that though, and it would shocking to say the least. (For the record Nenshi would destroy her if it ever took place)

Which is why it will never take place. Barb's job is to get as much exposure as possible in controlled settings where she can avoid the appearance of ignorance with the hope that her name reconition alone wins the race.

^McIver's MO hasn't been, and isn't too far from that either, frankly. There's a reason he's been so concerned about running to the tv cameras and microphones outside of council chambers for the last several years. He doesn't exactly shine in forums where people can directly and openly debate with him.

Both of their strategies are similar in that regard. Can't really blame them...its kind of a "don't screw this up" mentality. While it could be dangerous to try to play the trap for the rest of the game, it does work a lot of the time as well!

Are there any opinion polls out recently to show candidate support?

The fact so many non-interneting people (re: old) think its just between McIver and Higgins makes me oh so scared aad sad for this city.

I'm an interneting person (and not old, depending on your definition I suppose!) and I think its between these two. I clearly wish that wasn't the case and have worked really hard to help a totally different candidate, but only a good poll will tell whether there is a meaningful third candidate right now.
Anyone have an idea of how many turned out to the Higgins event at noon today?

Sorry, didn't mean that it was sad that old people "thought" it was, but sad that it likely is.
Its a race between an inept alderman and a newscaster who couldn't string a sentance or platform together on her own if her life depended on it.
Kill me now
