^Or option #3, the taxi driver lobby or another party who has a stake in the tunnel not being built has his ear.

In which case he's still incompetent as a city councilor.

I am curious, as I only half understand transportation issues around the airport, why would taxi drivers not want the tunnel enough to lobby for it?

I know someone who is heavily involved in the taxi industry and who is currently dealing with stuff at the airport and I asked him what his opinion of the tunnel was, and he said it really didn't matter one way or another to him. He said it was mostly the hotels that wanted it built.

I think that the taxi lobby that wouldn't want it built are those based on it taking longer to get to the airport from certain locations (or vice-versa), and thus they get higher fares.

Purely personally I don't care whether they build the tunnel. I can't think of a time that I would ever use it. Who knows though, maybe there are a lot of people who see the value?

So, I'm watching a mayoral debate on Shaw. Don't know when it's from, I'm guessing within the last week, and the thing is hilarious.

Barb Higgens is a hilariously bad speaker. For someone on TV for several decades she fumbles through her words so poorly.

McIver just took a shot and Nenshi the moderator gave him a verbal slap that had my chuckling, Mciver apologized for it.

They were all asked who their influences were, pretty fluffy question obviously. Alnoor Kassam then went on to name Jesus, Gandhi, Mohammed, Mother Theresa.... no one major or anything.

Those all sound like good influences for a mayor; with Jesus as influence, he can get rid of all those annoying temple marketplaces; with Ghandi's policies, he can increase police effectiveness by insuring that they use passive resistance in dealing with gangs; he can put all care for the poor in the hands of nuns, ala Mother Theresa; and best of all, he can copy Mohammed's policy of forbidding all but Muslims from living in or even entering the city, which would be a great way to cut down on urban sprawl.

I walked by them handing out Barb Higgins stuff by the C-trains this morning. Hoping to see some actual substance, or something about a platform that doesn't make her sound like an idiot. Instead it was something about her speaking at the Plaza.

Kent has shown that he isn't afraid to stand up for what he thinks. Just because some organizers fail to accommodate a man in a wheel chair doesn't diminish that fact.
A wheelchair ramp for a stage at an event isn't special treatment, its reality in a society where we have those with disabilities.

I don't disagree, but do you really think that he should make a scene? I'm sure he was less than thrilled, but rather than take the chance to take a shot at the organizers (who almost certainly meant no ill will) he took the high road and just participated as best as possible.

I noticed Nenshi is placing large signs promoting himself on Schoolyard's and public parks. Is this legal?

He probably did the right thing under the circumstances. I was more responding to the others on stage and the organizers. It seems like a temporary solution could be found most of the time in that situation.

But I wasn't there so I can't say for sure.

My family was heavily involved in campaigning in every level of government when I was growing up. One of the things we would do as kids is put up signs and we were always told never to put one up on public property as there was a fine involved.

Now on election day, some campaigns that had extra signs would sometimes get us to put them on public property, and then take them down first thing in the morning. It was pretty common of all candidates so I guess they were just playing the odds that 1 day wouldn't be a big deal.

I have no idea if that has changed now, but whenever I see someone with a wack of signs running down the boulevard into MacKenzie Towne or rounding the traffic circle, it always gives me a sour taste in my mouth.

There are always signs along the roadside, which I assume must be allowed, since they don't get taken down right away. Its not like it would be hard to figure who had them put up, since the person's name is on it.

You can put them on public property, but you can't put them on school yards and roads where the speed limits are over 50km/hr (IIRC).

I know that some people dislike the election signs, but the reality is that you have to get your name out somehow, and its effective.

The signs don't bother me, as long as they take them down when the election is over.

Some information regarding signage:

http://content.calgary.ca/CCA/City+H...n+Signage+.htm

http://www.calgary.ca/docgallery/bu/...erks/29M97.pdf

There are some public roads that are completely off limits. They all have to be down 36 hours from when the polls close.

The vague area is how soon they can go up. The bylaw says

Quote:
"Election Sign" means any Sign used to promote a candidate or party
during a municipal, provincial or federal election, or any election held
pursuant to the Local Authorities Election Act, S.A. 1983, c.L-27.5;
Technically we aren't "candidates" until nomination day.

I have a call into the returning officer to clarify this.

Does anyone know where I can find schedule for Mayoral Forums from now until the election? I'm sure it's in this thread somewhere.
