Or, and this might be a bit radical, you could feed the infant and get rid of the parasites.

If that was possible... but you are assuming that this would always be an option, which it isn't. I said that if the other choice was to either let them live a short and painful life. The fact is, sometimes illnesses are not treatable, in which case euthanasia is probably the most humane option for humans and animals alike... especially if they are unable to understand what is happening.
Anyway, aren't we talking about dogs here? People euthanize animals all the time because they have illnesses that might be tended to if they were humans. These dogs may have had to be put down for all we know. The method is the issue, which I agree was pretty brutal.
If animals are sick or not going to be cared for properly so they become a danger, then I think you need to have them destroyed. You know, all these people offering rewards for her arrest would probably be better served if they instead raised money for animal shelters, speying and neutering and education for preventing cruelty to animals, because I can assure you that Bosnia does not have an SPCA in every little town like they do here. If we didn't have that here, you would see a lot more "nuissance" feral dogs running around, and as such, your attitude about them would probably be a lot different.

Well I don't think it was any of that. Its pretty clear what it was - a girl does something to dogs that most of us would do to other animals or bugs with glee, but because us as a society see dogs as friends, we are outraged. I'm not saying it right, but taking the emotion of a "dog is a man's best friend" ... it is what it is, and despite how highly we think of ourselves, we're only Mother Theresa to animals we like.

It actually reminds me of the seal hunt protesters who have no problem with bear or shark hunts. If everyone in North America got rats as pets (which are intelligent and sensitive animals), it would not take long until we started protecting them too.
The attitude many people have to dogs in other counties is different, just like I am willing to bet many of our parents and grand parents didn't see them the same way we do.
Like I said, all these people offering money for her arrest would be better off writing a cheque to the Sarajevo SOS (their version of the SPCA) to see if they can extend services to rural areas.

You're right, in the end it is mostly an issue with the method and the enjoyment she seems to get from it. Also the fact that they videotaped it and posted it on the internet. It's not just because it's puppys either. It woud be just as offensive to me no matter what newborn animals they were chucking merrily into the river.

You often find yourself putting bugs and/or other types of animals into a bag, chucking them into a river, taping it, and giggling to yourself in glee over it?
Isn't this more in line with a sociopath's behaviour?

Who are these people - most of my fellow seal hunt protesters are vegan/vegetarian?
Rats are very popular as pets in the UK - and yes they are intelligent and sensitive. We also saw quite a few non domestic ones brought into the wildlife hospital I worked in - which we assisted if they were just injured or euthanised if they had been poisoned.

Well, the EU just recently banned seal products from Canada and I doubt most people and politicians in the EU are vegans.

Some people in Canada have rats as pets too, but I still bet that if a farmer found a nest of rats on his property, he would have no problem destroying them the easiest way possible. He probably won't be bringing them in to the SPCA and paying to get them put down. He might even enjoy it. I know many people who enjoy hunting and grew up shooting critters for fun.
I absolutely disagree with the method the girl used to destroy those puppies and I can't see how anyone doing it could find it funny, but unfortunately, I don't see it as being rare. People kill animals for fun all the time (bear hunting for example). That is why I find the outrage over this incident hypocritical and a little over the top. The other thing is, not every culture sees dogs as "mans best friend". In parts of rural Bosnia, many of the dogs you are going to meet are strays or feral. This unfortunately affects people's attitudes about them (just like even though some people have rats as pets, most still think of the stray and feral rats as vermin). This is why I think people like Michael Bay (offering $50,000) and PETA (offering $2,000) for her arrest, would be better off donating to animal groups in Bosnia to make positive change (same thing with all those calling for her to be murdered).

Looks like a woman might have saved the puppies!!!
Link
Quote:
But today, it is claimed, the days-old litter were not swept to their deaths, but were fished out of the river by a 75-year-old grandmother.
The woman claims to have saved the dogs' lives after spotting them struggling to stay afloat at the side of the river as she made her way to a potato field.
However, although the woman posed proudly with the litter, it is not certain that they are the same dogs.
...
But the elderly lady believed she had rescued the same puppies whose fate had gripped the world.
Yesterday she said: 'They are healthy and happy. My problem is that they need at least three litres of milk a day and I live only on my small pension, but I do not have the heart to abandon them.'
The mysterious teenager, wearing a hooded top, caused worldwide outrage when she was shown online apparently killing six newborn puppies by throwing them into the river one by one.

They don't know for sure but I really hope these are the same puppies... I have a hard time believing it would have happened twice...

Thanks for the link. I am now done reading the thread, I'm going to walk away from this assuming the story is true, and the elderly lady rescued the puppies and have a good nights sleep.
