Yeah that's the wrench in the whole thing. Retail employees are restricted in what they are allowed to discuss with regards to iPhone 4.
It's also important to note that, while there might not be any available at store opening tomorrow... that does not mean that a shipment won't arrive at some point during the day. There are stories in this very thread about people standing in line and being told there is no stock available, only to continue to stand in line and have stock arrive two hours later.

The reason they always say that they have no phones is because apparently there is concern the shipments could get robbed.
Shipments come in almost everyday during the week

When I got mine they spent the whole morning telling me none would come in. I would be willing to bet if you wanted to line up..you would get one

I got there about 8:30 was about 40th person in line...phones came in about 1030...was out of there by 12...
Sidenote...process is much quicker and streamlined if you do not buy on a contract

My friend called the store while I was in line. They told him they didn't receive any. I had my phone an hour later.
I think they're required to tell people there aren't any when they ask. You can't disappoint someone if they think there aren't any.

You should see the people that wait around in my mall at Fido etc. every day to see if they get shipments that day. From before opening until like 3 PM sometimes. But even when they do get some, they get very few. Stick with Apple. =P

Employees said at 7 when they arrived, that they had no stock for today and wouldnt be getting any. All 20 people in front of me left, and now we're the only original people left in line. More newbies arriving minutely.
Apparently Im the only one dumb enough to wait it out in hopes

Nah, bailed at 9. They're shipments are all being sold next day now apparently. They didn't get a shipment today, so today's shipment will be for tommorow AM.
Supervisor and store manager gave the same spiel, so I think that might be their new policy now. (which is consistent with the rest of this week)
