have you ever tried to fight for custody of your children?

ever worked in an office and heard women say things a man get fired for?

did you know that more men die from prostate cancer than women from breast cancer? have you seen how much goverment funding they each get?

of course I'm going to extremes to say it is a womens world but the power has swung too far the other way now.

How is this absurd?

Yes the average American woman is probably still earning 20% less, but there are such things as leading trends.

For example, it was only 10-15 years ago that the stat came out where women outnumbered men in first year college classes. Did you say - "well, men still outnumber women in general for college so hah, it means nothing"

It was only ~5-10 years ago where the stats were in that women were graduating at a much higher rate than men. Did you say - "Well, there are still more total male graduates aged 25 to 200 than women!"

Now, that same group is starting to progress into the working world, and surprise, they're earning more than men in the same age group. Of course, there are more men in the working world than women, but it is irrelevant to this discussion.

Feminists cling to the 20% wage gap as if it were gospel. But I absolutely believe that especially at the new-grad to intermediate level in today's Canadian society, men and women are completely equal. This article merely strengthens my belief in this.

Oh, the article also shows that this year is the first time where there were more women than men in "highly paid managerial positions." Whatever that means. Maybe we'll attach some significance to this 5-10 years from now.

No it hasn't.

Here is a very simple test which you can apply to film and television which quite clearly demonstrates just how anti-female modern society is. It's called "The Bechdel Test".

It's a test which you can use to determine if a film is "Feminist" or not. A film passes the test if it meets the following criteria:

If, at any point through the film, two female characters who both have names that the audience knows, have a conversation that is not about a man.

That's it. That's the whole test. Now name five films released this year that can pass it. Hell, name two.

I think younger girl's these days have it as good as us guys in most instances, and honestly I don't really see them struggling to succeed like their mothers/grandmothers probably did. The one big area that will always be an issue is that eternal question of family or career. It's pretty damn hard to excel at both.....not impossible, but if you're really good at one, chances are the other suffers.

I'm not saying that it means nothing, merely that it's not an indicator that somehow the balance of power has shifted to favour women, or that somehow it's a 'woman's world'.

While it may be true that men and women today have equal access to opportunity to work at the new-grad to intermediate level, that is a far cry from being socially equal.

Take, for example the thread right here on the main page of CP about the six prison guards "Living the Dream." This is a thread about people illegally observing two other people engaged in sex via a closed-circuit camera and our response to it here is to make jokes about how "hot" lesbianism is and reminisce about soft-core jail-porn. That's evidence of a profoundly discriminatory mentality.

I think it's great that women have the access to opportunity that they do, and I agree that in time, with the amount of women graduating college and entering the work force that we are going to see a levelling of the wage-gap. I also agree that with time we're going to see a levelling of the number of male and female CEO's and other executives.

But the workforce is only a segment of society and you're deluding yourself if you think that equality in pay equals equality in life.

You are just plain wrong. There is no expectation of privacy in prison. The guard watches that cell for 24 hours. If the inmates choose to engage in sex, the guard is not required to leave the post until they finish. There are other things wrong with that scenario, but there is nothing illegal about watching what is happening in the cell.

Fair point, but it doesn't change the argument about our reaction to the situation.

I kind of doubt that.
If this were about male guards watching two dudes having sex, there would have been a lot of gay porn jokes.

If it were about female guards watching two dudes having sex, there would have been a lot of gay porn jokes.

If it had been about female guards watching two females having sex, there would have been similar jokes to what's in the original thread.

That thread/article isn't an example of any sort of sexism, it's an example of a situation that is inherently funny regardless of gender.

So this is your example for it being a man's world.

Can I use the same logic then...I think coming to that conclusion because of your example is ridiculous.

I completely agree with your point on this.
But what really bugs me is that there is 140,000 cases of male rape in prisons in the US and society is silent about that.

Wow, some people have a crazy idea of feminism. I learnt somewhere that feminism was "true and perfect equality," which is something I, as a man, support. It's also going to be nearly impossible to attain, ever. I do NOT support reverse discrimination, however, and as a straight white male I fear it is a lost cause already.

That being said, obviously this guy lost in court. It's a choice to go out and party, and if a business wants to charge someone one price and another person a different price they are entitled to do so. As a consumer you are entitled to your choice of not frequenting an establishment that you don't like. Very simple. In fact, I practice this technique daily- if I go to a store or restaurant/bar and I don't like it for whatever reason I don't go back there. My business was lost, and the case is dismissed.

Good point. If men stopped going to ladies night, leaving only women paying discounted prices, that would end the practice. Apparently there are some men out there willing to pay extra for alcohol to hang out with women. Someone should build an industry around that! oh, wait...

I have a inherent problem with 'feminism' being about the concept of equality between genders when it is:
-Named after one gender
-Primarily concerned with the issues of one gender

I'm not saying that females in society don't have lots of issues to address before systematic barriers are removed...but call a spade a spade

If you can find something in feminism that is concerned with Misandry (the male version of misogyny) I'll be surprised...

THIS! Now this is something that has been pissing me off for years and years. Regardless of 'test scores', the Canadian education system is a complete and utter joke, especially at the lower grade levels. When I lived in Germany and attended school on a British Military base by Bergen-Belsen, by grade 5 I was playing with Magnesium bombs and Bunsen Burners. Then coming to Canada, you sit there and read a book and then write a test??? What an effing joke. It is absolutely pathetic.

If I get going on the drugging kids up rant I would easily type pages, so let me sum it up with simply AAARRRRRGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

You're making a lot of broad statements without citing anything....and though you have such a vague statement as this:

"did you know that 70% of violence on children is committed by mothers on their children?"

when its clearly false. For murders of children, things are pretty much straight down the middle (http://www.canadiancrc.com/Child_Abuse/Child_Abuse.aspx) with biological fathers/mothers at the exact same number. For such things as sexual assault, molestation, etc., 80% of all child abusers are the father/step father. (http://www.safekidsbc.ca/statistics.htm)

But keep on making drive by statements without backing them up.
