Nice car Hoot, from what I hear those Genesis coupes are great to drive.
How long do you plan on keeping it? I'm always curious to see people modify their cars, as doing so generally tends to lower a car's value substantially once you try to sell it, so it's a definite risk to do so. I know most buyers (including myself) would never consider a car if it wasn't stock....too many negative connotations (driven hard by some pe@kerhead, mods weren't done right etc) that go along with it to risk it. But hey if you're going to keep it for a long while, or can reverse it when you sell it, it might not be an issue.

No worries. I could understand the confusion, I think it was the rolley eyes that kinda pissed me off.
That's funny I almost went the same route as you did. I was thinking 06-08 Infiniti G35 but just couldn't find one that I liked used. It seemed like I liked the color of the outside, but not the inside (vise-versa) or it didn't come with the features I was looking for. I have a friend who is the business manager of a Hyundai he told me to take one for a rip and I feel in love with it and the features it came with for it's value. Also paying only $500 above dealer invoice was a nice feature as well.

I'll chime in as a car modifyer.
I dropped a decent amount into my current car.
- $2.5K for suspension
- $800 exhaust system
- $500 engine managment
- I don't even want to say how much for wheels/tires
- $1000 for OEM nav system (dealer wanted $3800)
- $800 for CF interior trim
- $600 for CF roof spoiler (not as cheesy as it sounds, very subtle)
If I went to sell it there are only a few of those items that would have positive value (and some negative value like you say).
The navigation, wheels (everyone loves getting 2 sets of wheels with a car) and CF interior all have value. At the very least the CF interior makes it so that your car will sell first if there are a few for sale.
Suspension is likely a negative value, as it implies the car was tracked/driven hard. If you take it off and sell it, I can probably recover 50% of the value.
Exhaust, the labour to take it off isn't worth it, and the space to save the OEM one makes it impractical. You're only chance is trading it with another local person with the same car who will take care of the labor and flip you a few bucks.
Engine management, stuck with the car. I wouldn't even tell someone it had it unless I could tell they were an enthusiast when buying the car.
In summary, you get absolutely worked modding a car, financially, but you get slightly less work if you put it back to stock.
I'd never buy a modified vehicle.

Usually my goal is to pay it off and get a new one, yes I'm one of those stupid people. In all honestly I have a younger brother who will be getting his license in that range of years so I might just give it to him, but at the same time 300HP+ might not be a smart idea for a new driver.
With my mods I usually don't do much that can't be reversed. So far I have just changed the front grill, rims (still have my stock rims/tires for winter), lowered and a few lighting changes. In the next 12 months I'm looking to add sway bars and an intake, nothing crazy. I don't plan on going too crazy, I love the look of it as is and performance wise it's face enough and can handle pretty good.

Yep, I think you're right hulk. A few of those would definitely increase the value, and a good chunk would work to lower it. At the end of the day one has to go in with the mindset that these are for you, and you only, and take the financial hit.
If I kept a car for 5-6 years, I might make some mods to it. Otherwise, I'd just try to find a stock car that already performs the way I want it to.

You didn't also give your younger brother 400k to buy a house by any chance?
Hey, if you can afford the mods and it float's your boat, more power to you.

No my brothers don't cry about shoe quality.
Like you said I do it for me and only me. If it lowers the value when I sell it, oh well. Cost of doing business I guess. My first car was a customer lowrider truck and then my vehicle after was just a stock car. I hate that car so much and treated it like from day one. Bought it brand new and once didn't take it in for an oil change for close to 2 years. I feel when I can make my car 'custom' I have more pride in it, take better care of it and enjoy driving it. Hell this car I wash twice a week where my other car there was a period of 5 years I let it go.

Ha damn, what the hell did you buy, a Sebring? That's the only car I can think of that would result in so much apathy/hate.

That's the problem.
I did exactly that with this car, but I always have a thirst for more. It's like a disease. A very very expensive disease.

Ha, I hear ya. I have absolutely no practical need for a car and probably should spend nowhere as much in relation to my other living expenses, yet I'm still number crunching scenarios where I could realistically own an Elise or a 993 in the next year or two.

Worse! Chevy Cavelier.
I needed a vehicle I could pay cash for and take out to Calgary when I moved because I had no idea what roads were going to be like and didn't want rear wheel. I'm almost disappointed I traded it in and didn't get to push it off a cliff!

Very true.
We've stuck to only using factory approved JCW kit on our MINI, it's the only brand that won't bring negative value to the car. Having said that, there's no way I'm selling the car anytime soon, it's too awesome of a drive.

Make sure to crunch in plenty of maintenance money if you're going to buy either of those.
Modding cars is only worth it if you get good bang for your buck. I managed to add 150hp to my truck by putting $2000 into it.

Pretty much. I built my Mustang from pretty much scratch, and while its an amazing car, it doesnt have any of the refinement or polish that most people want out of a vehicle.
Its probably worth half what I put into it, if I found the right buyer, a third if I'm lucky.
The question is, just how fast do you want to go down that drag strip?
