Actually, there is scientific evidence that suggests including red-meat in your diet may make you more susceptible to bacterial (E. coli) infection and increased incidence of cancer. This has nothing to do with antibiotics, growth hormones, fats/cholesterol and or rays of sunshine...
The cause, is believed to be an evolutionary change in the type of sugars expressed on human cells compared to other mammals including the delicious bovine. We have evolved to express a sugar called NeuAc while cattle express NeuGc. However, to make a long story short our body is capable of incorporating NeuGc on our cells which despite our inability to make this sugar is provided in large quantities following the digestion of steak.
Toxins from the bacteria can interact favorably, from the bacterias point-of-view, to the NeuGc on our cells and increase infection. Also, our own bodies can react to the NeuGc creating an inflammatory response that has been linked to tumour progression.
Having said all of this and knowing all of this I continue to eat beef, lamb, pork, deer, elk, and moose etc without any loss of sleep.

I do sympathise with the "OMG suffering animals" aspect, a necessary evil I guess you would say. If we could grow the meat without growing the rest of the cow/chicken I'd be cool with that.

Actually, I agree. There's a Greek myth that I am vaguely going to paraphrase without actually remembering the details, but basically a guy goes to hell and he arrives a dinner table. He finds out that his punishment is an eternity being eaten alive by worms in return for his gluttony.
I can deal with some suffering, but I agree we should try to minimize the suffering we impart upon our delicious prey.
I lived on an organic farm for about 10 years where we provided about 70% of our own diet through raising chickens, cattle, vegetables etc... Basically all of our diet except for complex carbs and fresh summer fruit. It was a good experience and it taught me a lot about domestic animals and how they should be raised for food. Except for chickens. God help me but I have no sympathy for those devilish birds.
I've been a vegetarian since I was about 15. My family was in the slaughterhouse/meat packing business.
That being said, I have seen plenty of info over the years to the effect that a vegetarian diet is NOT healthier. There is a lot to keep up with.
I don't tell people it's healthier , or try to convert them. And I have no idea what "nature" intended us to eat as there is evidence on both sides.
All I know is that steak on the grill that you guys love makes me ill . Yick.
On the other hand,I grew up in NJ and every summer we went camping near a monastery in Pennsylvania where the monks raised all of there own food.
Best milk ever! I can really see why organic beef from cows who wander around in a field all day would taste better than the factory farmed stuff.

Well, not to discount what you said as I have no idea if its true or not, but there is also a lot of evidence out there suggesting that lots of red-meat, because of what it is fed--corn, also makes the person who eats it more susceptible to bacterial infection, mainly E. Coli.
There have even been some cases in the US where people died and after finding out that E. Coli infection killed them, some people involved traced the meat back to feedlots that primarily feed corn, or a corn-based diet.
But you still have an interesting point, and despite all of this, I'll join you in eating a good steak every once in a while without worry.
Actually they bite like demons and their mouths are literally like toilets, so any bite gets horribly infected. They eat their dead and they smell like the unholy.
If the immoral aspects of factory farming are an issue, you can opt for free range beef, pork, or chicken. Of course, you're going to pay more for it and likely will have to go out of your way to find it, both of which are reasons why people don't.

Actually, I have read this about corn-fed cattle also. I believe this has to do with development of highly acid-resistant pathogenic E coli in the animal.
