The last time I listened to CJAY, which was at least 10 years ago, they regularly sung that BINGO the dog song or something like that. It seemed like it was on every morning. I wouldn't be surprised if they still do.
The last time I listened to CJAY, Forbes was making some pretty bad pedo jokes. Now, I'm no prude, I just happen to prefer pedo jokes to remain on the internet, not on the radio when kids might be listening. And it wasn't just a joke, it was some lame skit that started to drag on. Some garbage about a man and a boy that was just awkward. Besides the terrible personalities, they play ocean frickin pearl every day.
Forbes is a loser and CJAY sucks.

That's one thing Edmonton has that Calgary doesn't. Decent radio.
I love me some Sonic! DJs with real names, not nicknames, no banter. The morning show is only one guy and its great!
I have to admit, that Sonic is probably the best commercial station I have ever heard, for their total lack of morning zoo, gonzo dj's, ######ed games, etc etc. I don't always like the music, but at least the dj's don't grind on your nerves. Garner Andrews is a genuinely funny guy.
Aww muffin, did I hurt your feelings by pointing out the obvious? The fact remains that commercial rock is easily one of the most popular genres of music, and will continue to be so no matter how pretentious a d-bag you choose to be about it.
Awww cupcake...you have no idea how much of a pretentious d-bag I can be. Just because its popular doesn't mean its good. I hear crack-cocaine is fairly popular, as is taking a dump once or twice a day.

There was one called "X" or something in Victoria. When I was there a few years back it was pretty decent. But I fully agree with the comments about Sonic. By far the best commercial radio I have ever listened to. Unfortunately I often forget to tune to it because I am so used to that good old "aux" setting these days.
And just because you like something doesn't make that thing good either.
Music, like any other art form, is about taste. There is no right or wrong opinion.
So explain why ThreeDayTheoryOfANickelCreed has:
- The exact same guitar tones?
- The exact same synthesizer patches? (Minimoog used to be cool).
- The exact same kick drum and snare asthetic?
- The exact same placement and compression ratio on the vocals?
- The exact same mastering choices?
- The inability to be written out in piano score, only in tablature?
- A strict conformity to form? Always intro to verse to chorus to verse to chorus to bridge to chorus?
- A complete lack of original chord progressions? Same I to the IV to the I with a build towards a V which then just crashes back into the I? Or if the song is whoring the drop-D tuning, I-VII-I-VII over and over...?
This isn't to diss all mainstream new music, as there is a tonne of quality stuff, but I will never ever admit any artistic merit in Shlock Rock and will argue until I am blue in the face. As much as I don't particularly like their music, the most original thing in mainstream radio in the last five years was arguably The Killers. It takes skill to sing and play their music and an inventive mind put those song forms together. And thats why they had three #1 hits from their debut album.
I could go on and on and on, so I digress.

I would note that the highest the Killers have gone on the Billboard top 100 is 10 with Mr. Brightside. When You Were Young reached #1 on the US modern rock chart.
Nickelback, by comparison, has had six top-ten singles on the Billboard top 100 compared to the Killers' one, with How You Remind Me reaching the top for four consecutive weeks, and spent 13 weeks at the top of the modern rock charts. They have had 7 #1 singles on the modern rock chart.
Album wise, Nickelback's last four albums topped out at 2, 6, 1, and 2 on the Billboard top 200 chart, and all are multi-platinum. The Killers' three albums are all multi-platinum as well, but none have topped the chart.
Now, obviously this is all out of context of your overall point, but seriously, you left yourself open by trying to claim "skill" = #1 hits in this regard.
I'm not arguing that Nickelback and its clones are a shining example of brilliant songwriting. What they are, however, are bands who understands how to appeal to the widest demographic and are incredibly successful at doing so.

Or... the lowest common denominator. For me, music is very important in my daily life. So important, in fact, that I won't let a radio station, chart, industry award, or popular opinion, etc. make that decision for me as I simply prefer to be more involved in the hunt and acquisition of music. That's why most commercial radio doesn't turn my crank.
I know that sounds really pretentious, and I don't intend it to be. Some people have a different outlook on music. A friend of mine has admitted that he doesn't have the time or inclination to "find" music, and he's happy with what the radio dishes out for him. And that's OK - I don't hold it against him. I only ridicule him and make jokes behind his back.

If you have an opinion or see where he is coming from then feel free to share. Arguing about music is healthy. It forces us to examine our tastes intellectually and I am certainly not above being proven wrong and then re-examining my opinions.
In the end I am undermining myself because I believe in the Ray Charles philosophy. "If I feel the music, then its real."
