Default Google Call Has Gone Live

Just downloaded Google's new call feature. Allows free calls anywhere in Canada and the US. $.02 per minute for anywhere else. I've only made a few calls so far, but the sound is crystal clear.

I didn't get a prompt, but I have a "Call Phone" contact in my contacts list. Clicking on it prompts me to install the software.

http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2010/...rom-gmail.html

Here's some more information, and it links into where you can download it from.

I'm really hoping they use this with Android integration; that would be awesome!

Yeah, I'm not seeing it. With android integration this would be amazing. I wouldn't have to use my cell minutes anymore. Just the data plan.

Would be interesting how much data a call uses.

Translation: you'll get this in Canada about the same time you get Google Voice (i.e., don't hold your breath).

I was also able to download and use. If you just go through Google, it gave me an error, but using that link earlier in the thread you can just get right to the software and install it.

I downloaded the stuff today too. I can make voice calls to other gmailers in my contact list. I was under the impression the new Google Call would allow you to make voice calls to any telephone number, not just people in your contact list who have also installed the software.

Perhaps I am mistaken...

So add someone to your contact list and include their phone number.

I did think you were supposed to be able to call anyone though.

I just downloaded and tried Google Call and you can call any number you want (cell phone or landline).

Starting today, you can call any phone right from Gmail.
Sounds like you might just be using the Gmail voice and video chat features which have been available for some time.
