Thanks. I rarely read the Sun so it was a revelation to me. Would this hold true for their print edition as well?

So you think that Carrie Underwood is going to sell more than 80 million albums? She's at 12 million now so it's not out of the realm of popularity. It's also pretty much impossible to compare the two in terms of talent. Underwood sings songs written for her and Tommy Lee composes music and plays drums. I personally think the latter is the rarer talent but that's just me.

Personally Underwood is the more talented performer, there is a reason she is winning the awards.

Lee on the other hand sure he plays the drums hardly is the creative force behind the band.

Acapella singing is typically used in voice competitions. If you want to call singing Purcell without piano accompaniment "karaoke" so be it, I guess.

But what percentage of the show is done without music? I don't watch it, but I do recall that they allowed people to play instruments did they not? That's a great change, but it doesn't really change the fact that they are performing other people's songs. I'm not saying they have no skill, they have a great deal of it. People use the term karaoke because it demeans the accomplishments, but there is very little else to compare it to.

The only difference between American Idol and karaoke is that the Idol contestants have to memorize the words. It's 90% karaoke. What they may go on to do afterwards though, like Underwood, is clearly not karaoke.

And just because its mostly karaoke doesn't mean they lack talent. They just have to abide by the rules of the contest while they're on the show.

I understand that is your opinion, however I disagree I don't find it Karaoke at all...

If it was Karaoke why is there so many Stars who are on the show?

(i.e. Musical talent that works with the Contestants on a weekly basis, guest performers etc,,,)

I play recreational hockey with my friends, we're not very good but we have fun and get some excersise.

The Flames don't play hockey though, do you see how good they are?

Well if they change up the song to a different style, it's a cover as apposed to karaoke.

I see Canoe (I believe owned by the sun or the other way around) ran the same story on their pages as well ... I guess the quote isn't an oversight at all.

I was going to stay out of this one but the above quote made me shake my head.

She is not more talented. She is a better singer. That is it. She writes songs that are made for her. SHe has a team of people who make her dance and sing and move the way that will sell more records....that is it.
Tommy Lee helps produce Crue. He is an amazing piano player. He is a great songwriter.

Underwood is a prime example of what is wrong with music today. Because of her and the morons that help these types out....to become "performers" (not musicians...they are performers....hence the karaoke comparison), we will never see the likes of Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Neil Young, Johnny Cash etc. These people were poets. None of them are amazing with instruments. None of them have great voices. All of them are ugly...but yet they have helped shape music as we know it. Yet here you are supporting "karaoke idol" and the "talent" that is produced because of it.

I am not knocking Underwood, I am sure she is a great singer. That is all she is. She is hardly a musician and she is no where near the performer, Tommy Lee.

exactly.....Lee will still be the outstanding musician. Underwood isn't a musician she is a performer...big difference.

What a nonsensical argument. One's a drummer/piano player/songwriter and performer, and one's a performer/singer.
