No, that in NHL10, you could tell your defenceman to pass it before the puck came to him. Now, you have to wait, get some power, then let it go, instead of doing a 1-time pass... if that makes any sense.

I thought I'd hate this but it actually isn't hard to get used to. Only complaint about that is when I wind up a pass it should be considerably harder for the opponent to intercept my pass, I have yet to find that is the case.
Thankfully I didn't really notice the speed burst.
I definitely need a few more hours with the game and I'm sure someone I know will buy it and I'll be able to get more play in because I don't think I'm gonna buy it.
The rate of improvement isn't what I'd like it to be but EA is making progress, albeit quite slowly but the game is getting better year to year.

You can definitely do one-time passes, I do the all the time. Like the one last night where I pressed pass a second time by mistake and one time passed away from a completely empty net.

I definitely find that to be the case. It's pretty much the only way to find the guy at the back door without the pass being picked off, as well as hitting a stretch pass across the middle. Soft passes get picked off way easier.

Does anyone find that the Hustle button doesn't do anything? I tap down on the left stick to press L3, and...nothing.

Here is how you do the one-time pass.
When you pass, the game switches to the guy who is likely to accept that pass.
Now, I think the logic is, the further away the guy is, the longer you hold the trigger. This distance also gives you an opportunity to charge that pass before it ends up on the tape of the other guy.
You can try it by pressing pass three times in a row after the initial pass. You guys will flick these crappy little passes all over and they'll probably be picked off.
I've done a one-touch pass for a one-timer. I didn't score, but doing it was neat.

1 tap
2 tap
3 tap
different speeds for each.
I notice it big time. If you want to see it in action, ice the puck and then do three quick clicks and you'll start to overtake the dman going back to retrieve it.

I can do it no problem when the play is going (IE: rushing through the neutral zone) but not off faceoffs, at least I've found... maybe I'm doing it wrong.

Do you mean simply passing after the puck is dropped, instead of tying up the opposing center, or whatever?

Win the draw by the centre, who passes back to the Right D man. The Right D man, the second the puck touches his stick, passes over to the Left D man who then shoots.
It's a very quick play. If you don't do it quick enough, the opposition D and forwards block the shooting lanes. Which is while in NHL11, it's frustrating, because he doesn't pass it quick enough. (and its a 'how long holding on right trigger' issue. sometimes he doesn't pass it at all).

jayems, i think i was having the same issue. it seems like after the faceoff, it takes a second to allow you to do something with the dman. its the only time i really noticed a problem.

I support the inability to do this, as I don't think I've ever actually pulled off what would be a pretty effective move. If I can't do it, I like that nobody can.

Noticed while playing locked positions with my brother that if you call for the pass from the cpu you bang your stick on the ice. Take note Kipper is King.

If the Stanley Cup presentation that is in the demo is in the final product then I will be heavily disappointed.
Same thing for about 4 years now.
Although the gameplay refinements might even the scale.

I don't know how anyone can say this isn't better than NHL 10 by a large margin.
The leap from 09 to 10 was very minimal, I seemed ripped off. NHL 10 to 11 though seems huge, the gameplay refinements are massive and they added a bunch of new things.

i finally played a game position locked at goalie. maybe its just me, but even this year, my team is still way better than the other team. this was a consistent problem i had last year with my goalie BAP. my team would have possession 70-80% of the time. my team would be great in their offensive zone cycling the puck and getting rebounds, whereas their team would be super ineffective in the offensive zone and get hardly any offensive chances. it gets incredibly boring. i also did see a sequence of wing to D passes that lasted at least 8 passes. might have to play more to see if its still a significant problem.
also the one thing i am noticing is that the ai for when the goalie goes behind the net seems pretty awful. whenever the goalie gets the puck and i get control of him, my defensemen go to the worst spots. what i try to do with the d-man before the goalie gets the puck is go to the open corner so i have space, yet once i get control of the goaliek, the dman i just had will decide to go in the totally opposite direction. thats been somewhat frustrating for me.
also with controlling the goalie, its still so hard to get behind the net and play the puck when playing goalie mode. they need like a special button that will quickly go back there. using the manual skate to skate back there is so ineffective.

I actually really like this feature and find it very realistic.
If you're a goalie and you're going to play the puck, you better be pretty freakin' confident in your abilities and not hesitate.
Otherwise...let the Dman get it.

i agree in general, but the goalie playing the puck behind the net is a play that occurs countless times in real hockey. yet in EA games it has always been impossible. most of the problem IMO is because of the collision issues with the net. in real life, goalies easily slide around the net to the back. in EA, you have to make a huge arc to avoid hitting the net.
like i said, i agree that goalies shouldnt be skating around being unrealistic, but it is a huge handicap to human goalies. because even AI goalies go back and play the puck pretty regularly now. that was huge progress for EA, but they need to refine controls and/or animations to allow humans to do it. because of the trapazoid, behind the net plays are about all that are reasonable; with that taken away for humans, they cant really play the puck.
