I just had a HUT with three Red Wings, all in their natural positions as my first line. I received a +5 All card, so I used that to boost Holmstrom to 96 overall! That first line's chemistry was 96 as well! Then, my second and third lines were centered by some guys called Backstrom and Malkin. Ever heard of them?

As I posted in the ``is psn laggy`` thread.
Quote:
Recently, I have not bought an Xbox 360 game in a -long- time, partially because I was too lazy to buy a wireless adapter, and my PS3 has it built in. Therefore, I have been buying ALL my games for PS3, and my Live subscription even expired.
Just picked up Madden for PS3. However, with NHL coming out, i know that is a game I will definetly play online -alot-.
So now I am debating on going out to buy a wireless adaptor, as well as a new live subscription just for NHL 11...or just buy the PS3 Version
|
Does anyone have any experience playing NHL 10 on both PSN and XBL?

Anecdotally, I have heard that the 360 version is much more consistent for online play. There's apparently less problems with headsets, and less server issues. Both of which are a problem on the PS3 version.
If had both, I would go with the 360 version.

I played NHL 09 on the Xbox and PS3. I actually found that the 360 version played worse. The game was choppier online and I had to constantly worry about game freezes/dirty disc error messages popping up. I've gone with the PS3 version since. Headsets did work better on 360, and were in greater abundance.

The goalies are only on pro right now, and I do feel like they play different. Sure, some animations are the same, but they'll actually squeeze the puck when taking a shot up high now and cover it. The rebound control is also TONS better; no quick flick from the point and having him kick out a 10 foot rebound.

For those of you curious about the lack of Stanley Cup patches in the demo, don't worry, they should be in the retail version.

So is anyone else going to focus on the HUT stuff when they get the game?

I really like the demo now, first couple games I was like meh, same old same old but it does feel a lot better than last years game.

Label me as unimpressed.
Not to say that I don't like the game, I do. It seems to be a slight improvement on NHL 10 but there are still a number of things I don't like. Just seems like the usual EA hype. Say the game will be the most amazing thing ever with their revolutionary changes and then it turns out they just tweaked it slightly.
Played Battle for the Cup against a friend. Only 1 goal was scored in the 3rd and it was the typical one timer where the goalie abandons his butterfly mid pass and goes into that splits move which never, ever works and only serves to give the shooter 3/4 of the net to shoot at. In other words the same stupid animation and goal that I'm used to from last year.
I like the hitting, broken sticks and a few of the other minor, minor tweaks they made but honestly it is not worth $70. I can play NHL10 for another year and won't be missing much. I'll wait for NHL12. Like most EA franchises every new version is more like a patch and only needs to purchased every 2-3 years because the improvements year to year are so small.
I'm talking only gameplay though, I don't play GM, BAP or online with NHL.
Other things I was less than pleased about:
The way the line change/strategy box now slides out of the little symbol instead of just appearing. When I'm playing a game and I want to change lines I don't have time to wait 1s for the little box to slide up so I can pick my line, I need it instantaneous. No idea why EA changed this. Change for the worse from NHL 10.
The goalies, as I mentioned, still have many of the same stupid animations. Why in gods name would a goalie who is in the butterfly and has a good chance of making the save randomly go into the splits and sit on his ass for no reason? No change from NHL 10. Mild improvement on some animations but the really bad ones are still prevalent from the hour or two I played last night.
The lame Stanley Cup presentation and celebration. Couldn't they have updated this? Make it skippable? Make the on ice "Stanley Cup Champions" animation customized to each team. How long would that have taken? An extra 5 minutes? I've seen the same lame ass Cup presentation 1000 times - literally, I play Battle for the Cup a lot - why can't they switch it up a bit. Allow me to control the guys as they skate around with the Cup, have celebration type controls where I can kiss it, sip from it, pass it etc. Did I mention it should be skipable? Jesus I hate it that it doesn't let me skip the 5 min long presentation.
Again, it isn't that I don't think NHL 11 is a decent enough hockey game. It is just that it isn't the massive improvement on NHL 10 that I thought it was going to be. I like some of the changes but EA, as usual, isn't even close to improving the game on a year to year basis to justify my spending $70/year on it. About every 2 years and there is a noticeable change in the game to justify buying it.

If you forget to exit the game before the end of the period in battle for the cup mode, it's actually faster to just turn off the system and restart than sit through the un-skippable cup celebration. Just a demo, so I don't really care ... I just thought that was funny.
Edit: I'm kinda getting into the EAUHL idea. I'll focus on it out of the gate, but I'm not sure if I'll stick with it. I'm still pretty confused how the playoffs will work. Does it just separate everybody playing online into 3 categories, and then within each category start sectioning off packs of 16 teams to battle in a tournament? If it's set teams do you have to co-ordinate them? Perhaps a FIFA fan can enlighten me here.
I suppose one way they could do it is the playoffs start and there's no set tree, you just play people regularly except that if you lose one of your games you're are eliminated until the playoffs end a few days later. Win 4 games and you win a championship. You could co-ordinate games played so that if I'm looking to play game 1 it matches me with other players in this position, and if I win I get put up against a random team in my difficulty level that is also looking for a game 2. Is that incorrect or far off? I just don't see how they can do set playoff trees.

Yeah but as I said I play 7 game Battle for the Cup series' against a buddy all the time. Like at least 1 series a week. I've seen it a billion times. Turning off the machine every time is a hassle. It isn't just in the Demo that it is annoying.

I do. Honestly, they're about the same. You run into lag every now and then on both services. I play on my 360 now because my PS3 mic went in the crapper.

but what you need to realize is that you are probably in a very very small minority that sees that video more than a couple times a year. many folks play only online, or only BAP or only GM mode and rarely if ever have to worry about the cup sequence. so i am actually ok with EA neglecting it most of the time.
with that said, i do understand your personal frustration as it does impact you a lot. i also applaud you for not turning it into a soapbox issue and just keeping as a personal complaint.

I was talking with a friend yesterday about it as we played through our 8th season of BeAGM with the Islanders (Stamkos 06 overall, best skater in the game, 99 acc, agil, speed), Okposo 93 overall, Hedman 95 overall).
He said something that I hadn't thought of but reflecting on it makes a lot of sense. I think this year instead of playing Online Vs. I will play EUSHL.
That is to say, I rarely play online vs. but when I did, it could be fun to have my own team to play it with.
I don't think it will hold my attention long enough to distract me from EASHL BeAGM mode but could be fun as a kind of 'on-going' quickplay format for when you just want one quick game or two.

If you want to bypass cup celebrations, just disconnect the controller then reconnect it. Takes you to the menu and you can exit out.

Unskippable cut scenes should not exist in any game. Full stop. No excuses.

I think I'm in your boat a little. I like online play, but I prefer to do it alone so I can do it on my own schedule. Online play in the past (that wasn't part of ... um ... so many abbreviations I've forgotten the BAP online mode) hasn't really had an end point, nothing to work towards. It's pretty cool there's a mode that let's you play as a full team and has a set goal each month and not just a never-ending line of games.

Some other issues:
- Freezes in Finals of ultimate team
- Passes are was too slow in terms of players reacting. Every time I win the draw back to a D man and want him to cross it over to the other D man, it never responds to my pass and when it does, it's way too late. Is there a way to combat that?

Are you saying it takes too long for the puck to reach the other d-man because the pass is too slow? If so, just hold the pass button down a bit longer, then release. The longer you press the pass button before you release, the faster your pass will be.
