he's been taking this stuff for a few years now and it worked - he's got a nice thick full head of hair again! he'll have to keep taking this drug, otherwise he'll start to thin again, but he doesn't care... and i bet his chances of prostate cancer are pretty low too!

A buddy of mine did that too, but suffered from some ED while on it. Supposedly the sexual side effects are very common.

I have to be honest with you I looked into some things a few years ago. I hit my 30's, my wife and I had our first baby, I wasn't hitting the gym as much as I used to, I was feeling old! My hair is thinning so I looked at a few options....here is what my findings were. First of all if you do want to do this there is two things that factor in Money & Time. I did talk to a dermatologist who said that don't listen to people that say losing your hair is from wearing a hat too much or wearing a hockey helmet, motorbike helmet etc. it's all genetics. From what I found the best but most costly (and painful solution) is hair plugs. I think some people like Jon Gosselin, Bobby Hull have got them done. Expensive but it works. The other solution is laser hair, this can be pricey looking at $1500 - $2500 depending on your hair I went to a place on 36th Street NE by Sunridge Mall for a free consultation...the thing is you if you do laser hair treatment you have to go in twice a week and sit in a laser treatment chair, use a special laser comb to comb your hair and you have to pay for pills that you have to take daily (those can have variety of side effects one of those I hear is weight gain). The simplest solution I found was using the Nioxin Shampoo (mentioned earlier in this thread). If you want to go the route of getting something done look in the yellow pages there are a ton of places that offer stuff, I know for you CJAY 92 listeners that DJ "WIXIE" used to go to International Hair revival something and was reporting on it but I never did hear how it turned out. Almost all places offer a free consultation, they take pictures etc.

^^^^Not very much. Usually most hair places in the mall sell them. Get one of the hairdressers to help you depending on your hair. You may not get thicker hair but it prevents from some of the current ones to fall out. Your looking at about $20 for shampoo and usually around $25 for conditioner these are decent size bottles that last awhile. I know head and shoulders recently came out with a hair restoration shampoo. I guess it's all about strenghtening your current hair.

I use Nioxin daily, and love it. It is an absolutely excellent product, with out a doubt the best hair care stuff out there. I have thinning hair, but not dramatic and it has slowed considerably in the last 15 years. I can attribute it partially to Nioxin, because it creates the ideal balance and health of the scalp for healthy hair growth. (I do other things to try and preserve my hair which I won't get into right now).
BUT, if you have aggressive genetic hair loss, it's not going to do anything for you, except make your scalp feel nice. Drugs will be your only option along with surgery if you want to go that far. Also realize that not everyone's hair loss causes are the same, and often hair loss is a combination of things. But the main cause is almost always genetic/hormonal.

Okay, I found some cheap Minoxidil and have been doing some reading. Apparently it works best at the first signs of hair loss, which is where I am now. It won't cause massive amounts of hair regrowth, but it will help you recover your hairline by a few degrees.
My plan is to use it in the temple areas daily. Apparently it can create a dependence, so I will avoid using it on areas that have no started to thin yet.
Can anyone with experience with this product give me advice?
I'm also going to pick up some Nioxin and use that too.

Ya...don't think you want to go that route. That is soooooo 80's. Nowadays they do micrografts. Instead of jamming 20-30 folliciles into your head at a time, they do each individually. Plugs would make you look like you had doll hair. Micrografts look 100% natural. You would not be able to tell you had it done other then the fact you are now growing hair there.

Propecia and Nioxin has worked wonders for me. Together, they're warding off male pattern baldness, my hair is much thicker, i don't have anymore hair loss in the shower, and I even have a few new hairs all along my hairline.
Until a cure is found for MPB, I'm sticking to this combination of products like glue.

I was born with a forehead the size of a drive-in movie theatre and 2 widows peaks. I've noticed my hair has thinned but not regressed. Thus, I've been using Nioxin #1 for years because my hair loss has been minimal and I love it. Like has been repeated, you won't grow much new hair but you'll keep your existing hair and it will look thicker.
My barber said that once a year it's good to mix it up so your hair doesn't adjust to it, so over the past few months I bought American Crew revitalizing shampoo and Bed Head Regrowth Leave-in conditioner. I've been going to this barber for 10 years and this is the first time he ever really tried to sell me product, so I don't think he was fooling me. It was only $50 for both and I've been using them for over 3 months now. He said once that product is finished to go back to Nioxin.

Is there any consensus on age where you should be safe? I always thought 30ish was a good age but I hear more and more about people that really start losing it far after their early 30s.

Your mother takes a fair share of the blame too. Male baldness is thought to be largely passed genetically through the mother.

A lot of people with hair in their 50s start losing it in their 60s....
Okay here is my plan. Going to buy Nioxin shampoo and use that. Also going to sparingly apply Rogain. Hopefully this holds me out for another 5 years. At which point I will be 35 and:
a) no longer care about my hair
b) get surgery
c) hope science can cure me without having to take estrogen pills

That's the theory I heard.... and it appears there is science to back it up..
Quote:
Research suggests that the gene for the androgen receptor, which is significant in determining probability for hair loss, is located on the X chromosome and so is always inherited from the mother's side.[22] There is a 50% chance that a person shares the same X chromosome as their maternal grandfather. Because women have two X chromosomes, they will have two copies of the androgen receptor gene while men only have one. However, research has also shown that a person with a balding father also has a significantly greater chance of experiencing hair loss.
|
But in my case, there isn't a single person on my mother's side of the family that is balding, but just about everyone on my dad's side had significant hair loss.

Ok I'll chime in as I'm not willing to give up the battle on baldness yet. I've been using monoxidil (active ingredient in Rogain) for quite some time and tried to double team it with Nioxin. Honestly I quit using Nioxin because I really didn't think it was doing jack squat and it was costing me an arm and a leg (it's not $20 bucks for a huge bottle think more like 600ml kind of thing).
If you are serious about the rogain stuff and go to the States alot BUY the stuff from the states, not only can you get a 5% solution (extra strength and can only get by perscription in Canada) but it's wwwaaayyy cheaper, I just got back from purchasing my yearly dose. Buy the no name stuff at any place practically and get 3 bottles for around $25 dollars.
Anyhow, i'm just trying to keep my hair as long as possible but its getting to the point where i'm just going to have to give in to genetics.

I don't think so. Nizoral comes across as a once a week dandruff shampoo. Nioxin is more of a a daily use shampoo that "supposedly" removes chemicals associated with hairloss
