So, $100,000 will actually go towards aid purposes.

It's a good job we cut programs in Alberta so we can turn around and send money to a country who wouldn't so much as give us a nickel if the same thing happened here.
Tired of giving to other parts of the world outside of Canada when our social services are continually running on shoe-string budgets, and we have people who can't afford food in our own country.

The scale of this disaster is huge. Unfortunately, this region spawned the Taliban and doesn't exactly tug at the Western world's heartstrings. There will be no groundswell of private aid for this calamity when men from this area plant roadside bombs to kill our soldiers. Pretty hard to get past that. I don't see a massive amount of aid coming from predominantly Muslim countries either.

I'd rather they hire 8-9 more teachers with that money.

Glad to see you have no idea how foreign aid works.
Its not like we write a cheque for $500,000 to them

The problem with social services(health care) doesn't revolve around not having enough money to throw at it.

The cost may not be a direct outlay of $500,000, but someone has gotta to pay for those relieft workers, their travel, food, tools, accommodations, etc. and it sure has hell won't be coming out of Ed's wallet.

All they do is give......
It's Western evil this, Western evil that, but as soon as something happens, what region of the world has to open their purse? The big, bad, evil West.
I can undertand it to a point, but when there are problems here (financially) to the magnitude they are now, you should be plugging the holes in your own boat first.
Call me the next time a country in the Middle East comes knocking on our door with a basket full of money when there is a disaster anywhere in the West (Including South America), than you can say how disgusted you are with how little the West has given. If a flood like that happened here or in the US, a lot of countries over there be dancing in the streets.
I feel bad for the people there, and it's definitely a tragedy, but there's only so much we can give. I prefer to give it to the people here or countries I know would do the same for us.

I think a lot of it has to do with ethnicity and religion.
MJM its pretty hard for a 3rd world country like Pakistan to help us in a disaster when their GDP is around $1000/person. I dont know too many westerners that make $1000 a year. Also no one is Canada is starving to death.

Just like the fake tapes after 911 showing people dancing in the streets in Palestine. Which were completely fabricated by the western news agencies.

If the same thing happened here you could be sure the Red Cross is here in full force. They received the donation and will allocate funds to the local Red Crescent relief efforts. As Canadians when disaster of this scale strikes anywhere we need to lend a hand.
Unfortunately due to the locale, this disaster will likely not receive all the funding that will be required and the innocent will suffer due to the actions of the few.

My face is a bum!

Its amazing how people perceive Pakistan and Afghanistan as just swarming with Talliban. They are a minority. Innocent people are suffering constantly in that region and even worse now.
You want to make sure kids in extreme poverty don't join the Talliban out of desperation? Help them when they need it instead of bombing their villages to get at the Talliban holing up among innocents.

The question is are we really going to suffer as Albertan because of this.
We're each giving exactly $.17.
