I fired a couple of female relatives recently because they were posting wackadoodle conspiracy theory updates daily and sometimes hourly. A few brief skirmishes on their Walls convinced me they were entirely too serious and since ignoring them isn't really in my job description it was either mortal combat in the traditions of old-time Calgarypuck Off-Topic Board discussions or simply making them disappear.
The lesson is that you can get in touch and maintain contact with far-flung relatives and friends you might not normally stay close with BUT you might find out some things about them you'd rather not know.
Facebook was an integral part in saving the 103rd Annual Priddis & Millarville Fair coming up this Saturday.
Initially, the Ag Society board cancelled the Fair in April but within two days of the decision a young lady had stepped up with a "Save The Millarville Fair" Facebook page and had over 800 people signed up in virtual moments, providing the catalyst to overturn not only the decision but also the board that made it. Now the Fair has set a record for entries and is expecting a big crowd (barring poopy weather) on Saturday. That's the power of the new world of social networking in a nutshell.

I often see "300+" new "updates" beside the "most recent" tab, but when I click on it, I only get about 20-30. I assume that the rest of the updates are things that I have blocked. Facebook is MUCH better without all that garbage.

Meh... use it for what you want and block the rest.
You just have to take the good with the bad. Yes the I am eating now, or I am going to the bathroom updates are useless but there are people out there who like the baby updates. You are not the only person the updates are for. If you don't want to read those updates just skip it and move on.
I usually hit the 300 updates and only need to read 10 or so of them.

The only reason that I use Facebook is because living so far from home, it's a convenient way to know what's going on with friends and family and vice versa. It saves me from writing stupid quarterly emails about "this is what's new in my life" that I know are annoying as hell. If I could conventionally communicate with the people that matter to me, I'd have sh--canned Facebook long ago. Because, really, I don't give a crap what some guy that I went to high school with and haven't seen since is up to these days.

Yep, I know the reason I signed up for Facebook so long ago was a post on CP. Must have been like 4 years ago.
