I've been watching this guy named Husky who casts a bunch of SC games, just to get an idea of how to play.
Thanks for the input fellas, I generally open with scv's to 9/11 then go sd, rax, sd to block my entrance, as soon as the rax is up I train 1-2 marines. Sometimes though it seems like I get attacked instantly...its ridiculous.

Build the first sd at the ramp then rax. No sense building an orphan sd in your base if it can be used to help block.

Terran just seems to take longer to get going than other races. Maybe I'm just worse than I thought.

What's annoying about Husky is that he has the full ability post videos with as long as a duration as he wants. He could upload hour long videos if he wanted to as they are youtube partner accounts.
But he still makes 10 minute videos just to get more hits and you have to keep digging for other parts.

Terran is actually the fastest and easiest and more versatile and easiest to adapt and change your tactics in response to the other player's build for most average players.
If you SD then RAX, both at the ramp @ 9 or 10 SCVs, you will never get beaten by most rushes. This of course, does not apply to wide ramp maps which are completely different. Then you go bunkers or just go 3 rax and pump out MM to counter.
Look at me, pretending to know what I am talking about.

I'm a 100% zerg player. If played right Terran are fine early in the game.

Oh, so what you're saying is it IS me....
Haha. I hate this game, I'm just too competitive and want to win all the time.

I know the feeling. Losing depresses me instead of making me want to play more. So I shy away from playing online mostly and just do custom games with friends or work to be able to defeat very hard computers consistently (then moving onto insane).

Amen to that. SC2 will be fun for me until September 14th. Then it will start collecting dust.

I have way more fun on BFBC2 running people over with tanks and flying helicopters. SC causes me way too much soul searching after a horrible loss.

Same here, except it makes me go online and search for how to win and to go borderline ocd to win....haha.
I've gotten to the point that myself and my friends can beat computers on very hard 8/10 times. So I figured I would dip my toe into 1v1 against a real person.....apparently the ability of a real person to reason and create strategies that adapt to situations is much better than any computer ever could be....

Yeah generally none of your early sds should be "orphaned". After you kill the choke point, you can build additional SDs along your cliff to use as scouts.
And yah playing comps is a completely different strategy. All you do it turtle the hell out of your main and you'll generally be okay. Comp never goes for minerals. You never even have to scout. With humans, scouting is huge, as is harassing. Gotta know how to guard your minerals too, or you're toast.
Edit: ever play against your friends, Puck? That should help you build up some good human strategies, and it's always fun to beat up on your friends

Admittedly I'm still pretty green to SC2, and maybe a lot of this has to do with playstyle, but I find Protoss with 5 to 7 Warp Gates makes it much easier to change your strategy on the fly.

Not sure I totally agree here. They have the potential to be and can in certain situations be flexible and adaptable because they can lift buildings or because they already have all the buildings.
However they also have the largest infrastructure requirement because you need all three - rax, factory, starport - plus tech labs, plus support buildings and eng bay/armory.
That's why they have an incredible ability to turtle until they're really kicking. A holed up, well defended macro'ing terran player can be tough to beat but it takes a long time for them to get there. Because it takes so long you see a lot of the pro's harrassing to buy time - with reapers, helions, banshees or even an infantry ball. They're not hoping to outright win the game, just buy enough time to build up the proper infrastructure.
That said if you're doing something like a 1/1/1, once you reach a certain point you do get that flexibility (because, well, duh, you have one of everything). But even then you might have to swap buildings (for example if you need a Raven for mobile detection)
It's not like you can throw down a gateway, see the opponent is going air then start pumping stalkers while adding on a stargate. One of the strengths of Protoss is that you can build a support structure and then warp in a tonne of different units from your Gateway (Zealots, Sentries, Stalkers, Dark/High Templar, Archons) So you need to time things so that you either a) have enough marines to deal or b) already have the factory and your starport under construction at the ideal time.
Yeah Terran can be super versatile but it's a heavy infrastructure investment to get there.
IliketoPuck, I know everybody says this...but watch replays of yourself. Click on your orbital command and run through on 8x. There should be an SCV training the entire time. If there isn't (and there probably isn't) then you now have something to work on

I gotta say tho, I am currently splitting my time between the Protoss and Zerg, and I'm finding them a bit harder to handle in a game. Nevertheless, even tho the Zerg seem a bit unpopular, I'm sure that you can find a few Zerg players on CP. I be up for some practice games, but I'm not quite sure I'd make it to Plat leauge, let alone Diamond...

I am the same. I'd rather boot up and FPS because for every time you spend 45 minutes losing to one guy in Starcraft, you can spend 45 minutes killing 30 different guys and smiling in an FPS.
Most of my Starcraft time is devoted to playing custom tower defense games and the like.

Yea, the SC2 ladder system seems to like to keep your win-loss ratio around 50%, so some losses are inevitable along the way. I wouldn't feel too badly about them. If you are beating those odds even by a bit, you are already doing quite well

Terran are actually the slowest for getting a defensive unit out without compromising early game success.
Terran can be faster than Protoss, but unless it's reapers, those marines are gonna get zealot'ed up. If it is reapers, then the terran has likely given up early SCVs and will take time to recover, and if the reaper rush failed then they might be in trouble.
This is why Terran have the ability to wall off, or games against protoss and zerg would be over in the first 3 - 5 minutes every time.

PS, Deadpool (blaster86) and I have been playing some games lately. He's almost as bad as Torture (who makes IliketoPuck look pro)
