I'm number one platinum and it won't bump me up into diamond -_-
It's not based on ladder rank, it's based on win ratio. If you're winning at a 4 or 5 to 1 ratio then a promotion is inevitable but if you are at a 2 to 1 or 1 to 1 then you likely won't get promoted as you are at the .500 win level that blizz wants you at.

I just installed the game this weekend, and I have had my butt kicked across a few maps already. If I get half as many points as the other players, I consider that a victory.
I would definitely love to have some sort of tournament once I get better acquainted with the game. I imagine I will be sticking with protoss only for a couple weeks.
I got lit up last night.....thought I was the deal after going 3-0 in my first placement matches.
Got zergling rushed in what seemed like 35 seconds, and then zealot rushed the next two games.....
After being so awesome, I got placed into BRONZE! I know, exciting, and pretty awesome placement.
I'm almost at the top of my division, but wow is playing against real people alot different than bunkering against the computer.
Hah, yeah it's very different. Fun though. You probably got 6 pool'd, if you scout and see a VERY EARLY spawning pool. (Probably done by the time your scout gets there) chronoboost a zealot out. Run your probes around 'till the Zealot gets there and then attack with the zealot leading so he takes all the hits.
If you manage to fend off a 6 pool you've already won because it's an all-in and there economy will be in the tank.
lol I lost a 2v1 last night. So embarrassing. The other guy's partner left at the start, and I was totally thinking easy win. I got up some marines and siege tanks and made a run at the other guy's base early on, expecting backup from my partner.
Ends up the other guy went for the marine rush. My army got barely got killed, but then my partner sucked, opting to go straight for void rays (who does that anyway?? void rays are terrible against marines) and he just swarmed us with marines.
Next time, I play the patience game on the "given" victories. If I had stayed sieged up on the cliffs of my base instead of rushing him, we would have won. Argh!

I was involved in a long drawn out 3v3 like that. One of the opponents left early and we took the other two lightly. Took over an hour and a bit to finally kill them off after almost losing it.

Yea I play terran...what happened is I went to block my entrance, and didn't get it done in time so the zerglings showed up and owned my scvs before my single marine could do anything.....

If it's a 6 pool it's possible that you're not walled off at that point. I don't play Terran so I'm not sure exactly what you have to do to counter a 6 - pool, but it's the same idea...muster what you can, if you barely hold it off you're ahead.
Perhaps an earlier Barracks? Are you making a marine or two before you add on a Tech Lab/Reactor? If you scout and see the pool is already done and you're only at like 10-15 supply I would also suggest getting your wall up ASAP. Don't need the supply depot yet? Doesn't matter. Even just start another Rax (or eng bay, factory, whatever) so that the marines can shoot safely and then cancel it when he leaves.

If you ever get a chance, you should watch this replay. It's a long drawn-out battle between two pro-level guys. The way the protoss player turtles in his two bases is pretty unreal.
Warning: the whole thing is an hour long. I swear I have a life though!!
