Jeez, let me clarify... it's different than just being too lazy to shave for a few days. Heck, I go through that phase every two weeks or so, but it's the guys who revel in looking like slobs. You know what I mean.

At the end of the day, it's just preference, I guess. I do tend to judge perpetually slobby people. Not that I'm perfect, by any means, but I'm sort of with narbez in the end. You've got to put some effort into your appearance. It doesn't mean you need a $20,000 wardrobe or use all the fanciest baby seal fat products on your face, but, in my world and the way I was raised, it's important to put your best face forward everyday.

Is that fair?

For dress shoes, I own shoes ranging from $25 to $500 but the best ones for me have been Rockport. They are the most comfortable by far which helps since I walk to work everyday (snow, rain or sun) and also handle the elements the best. My last pair I bought in Houston while on business a few years back for $25 USD at Macy's. I wish I bought a few more pairs! Here in Calgary they range from $75 to $150 depending on if they are on sale or not. I still wear them most of the time and only wear my more expensive but less comfortable dress shoes the odd time to switch things up. If I had to strart from scratch I'd buy a few pairs of Rockport and stick with those.

For the whole work etiquette debate here's my take:

I work for a Wall Street bank that has an energy trading desk in the Calgary. When I first started out I worked in New York City. When they opened up our Calgary back in 2004 I moved back.

New York Head office: suit and tie every day - no exceptions. You basically were told that you should have $1000+ suits. Cheaping out didn't help your career as shallow and lame as it seems. That's the Wall Street etiquette and I was fine with that.

Calgary: at first we followed the New York dress code but a few years back changed it. The Calgary take was that it didn't fit in with the oil and gas crowd so now we wear dress pants and dress shirt (no tie) and jeans/dress shirt on Fridays. I personally like it. For business travel to big financial centers like New York or London where that's the code or personal for weddings I dig them of my closet.

Calgary is not a suit and tie city and I like that.

I have a pair of Born brand for my dress shoes. They're very comfortable. I usually buy Rockport but I though I'd go for a change.

I agree about Macy's, they have the most insane and best shoe sales.

I can see it. Remember, living in NYC is not constantly visiting fancy museums, going to Broadway shows, and eating fancy pizzas like most people tend to do when they visit. At the end of the day, you have to work, pay the bills, and hustle just like anyone else. It's a pretty tough place to hack it (especially once you get in to family-rasing years), no matter the money. It's a great place, but not always a long-term solution.

That's a pretty bizarre sentiment insofar as it assumes that in the real world, there are no common prejudices on appearance whether it's in the business world or elsewhere.

One must be careful about expressing that judgement. A very probable example: "Boss, I really think you dress like %$@# and I think it's going to hold you back in your career. If you were more like me, you'd have my success too".

I think there are three ways of expressing it, two of which are appropriate. One, anonymously on an online message board, two in my head, and three to everybody's perpetually slobby face.
