Default What Did The Flames See From Logan MacMillan?

They gave him a seven game tryout and his stats were underwhelming while there, and the Flames promptly traded away the top scorer from Abbotsford to obtain his rights. What did he show that was not on the stats sheets?

MacMillan is also younger. 21 I believe.

It was also mentioned they were doing Jaffray a solid since he had no chance of making the Flames any time soon. At least he has a shot at a call up with the Ducks.

It would be a mistake to believe their opinion on MacMillan was based solely on his time playing for Abbotsford. They would have scouted him heavily in his draft year and probably somewhat since then as well. For all we know he might have been a kid they liked as a 2nd/3rd rounder in Backlund's year. I'm not writing off his time in Abbotsford as not factoring in to the decision, obviously it did but it need not be the main or only reason why they signed him. Presumably Playfair and Duane Sutter liked the kid's attitude and what he showed in practice as well.

That was Logan's rookie year in pro hockey and it was marred by an off ice incident that made the Ducks want to cut ties. Presumably the Flames see some longterm potential.

Doesn't his dad work in the Flames organization or one of the affiliates?

Yes, he's a scout for the Flames (and also a former Flame who was traded to Colorado for Lanny).

Yeah, I guess there could be some nepotism there but really it's a no lose trade. We got Jaffrey for nothing so anything positive from MacMillan is a plus.

Bingo! Nepotism over logic. Every time. The Sutterite formula for success.

To be fair, our prospects that are actually young could use the playing time and I think even with the move, Abbotsford has a pretty sweet first line.

I don't think it is nepotism at all. Who would know MacMillan's potential better than his dad? It just may be that here is a kid who was lost in the Anaheim system with a lot of potential. His dad wants what is best for the kid true, but he also has some pretty good inside information on him.

The potential for this paying off is extremely high.

Its nepotism to trade a guy that had 0 shot of having an impact on the Flames for a 21 year old former first round draft pick?

Who cares is Jaffray probably would have had a better season in Abbotsford I would much rather have the guy (Macmillan) that might actually help the Flames at some point in the future.

Logic says to take the young kid with potential.

I liked this deal when I found out the player we got was drafted ahead of Backlund. From what I hear he is not going to be cracking the big roster anytime soon but neither was Jaffray. Good move by the Flames regardless.

Here is hoping he is a late bloomer.

The fact that his father works for the Flames likely is a reason why the Flames traded for him. Who better to tell you how to motivate a kid, or give you some background information than his own dad, maybe the kid will feel a bit more accountable too playing for the same organization that his father works for. It was pretty low risk so why not try it, he was a former first round pick.

Lets face it if the Flames traded for Brandon Sutter someone would scream nepotism and how no Sutter ever should have played in the NHL because they're all useless plug farmers. When the reality is that every team in the NHL would love to add Brandon Sutter to their team. There are those who just hate anything Sutter these days.

Really, it was a dufus for dufus trade with one of the dufuses being a good minor leaguer and the other one maybe having a little more potential as a prospect still.

A little more potential? I suppose so, in that any potential is more than none.

Jaffray is 29. MacMillan is 21. If all MacMillan ever does is play a regular shift in the AHL, the Flames win that trade just on longevity.

I grant you, that's not a foregone conclusion. MacMillan might wind up in the ECHL again, or disappear from hockey entirely. But it's not a bad bet to make.

It's an important season for MacMillan, he needs to play like a first round pick.
