Setanta HD is on Bell channel 1414, there is nothing on it yet but there hasn't been anything HD to show yet (supposedly Shaw is not offering it right now)
guessing the first thing it shows in HD is either a Championship game on saturday or the Community shield on sunday

I called Shaw today about a PVR issue and asked the guy about Setanta HD, he didn't know anything about it.

It's the Community Shield.

GolTV isn't bad, especially for the price. I have it bundled as one of my digital 7-pack so it costs me just over a buck. The one thing that really sucks about it, on Shaw at least, is the picture quality. Even when compared with other SD channels, the picture is pretty fuzzy. I'm not a pixel counter by any means, but there's HD > SD > GolTV.
During a recent Toronto FC game, they mentioned that it was being broadcast in HD on Bell and Rogers. So maybe GOL is moving in that direction, but I doubt that Shaw will be in a hurry to pick it up.
And I agree with you on Setanta. If I had more time to watch games, I'd be all over it. I am torn, however, now that Norwich is back in the Championship. Setanta claims that they'll broadcast 60 games from the League Championship this season, and with all things being equal, that should mean that Norwich will be shown about 5 times... is it worth it?
Has anyone done a quick channel switch for an important game? Does Shaw even let you subscribe to Setanta for a day and prorate it, or are you on the hook for the whole month? I have switched my digital channels a couple of times when it suited me and then switched back right after, but those aren't in the same category as a $15/month specialty channel.

The one thing? How about production quality period? The commentators are asshats, especially that one guy that does every game that you want to watch. The picture is pure garbage and everything else is so ham handedly put together it sucks.
GOLtv blows. Its like third rate Spanish Television thats sometimes in English. Setanta is worth every dollar to me.

Fair enough. The programming is very piecemeal - a little bit from here, a little bit from there. But, if the OP wants to watch some La Liga, this is one option. Especially at a buck a month. I'm certainly not comparing Gol to Setanta - their offerings aren't even close.

suspiciously 1414 on Bell still isn't open and on the new channel/free preview channel it is no longer listed
Setanta also lists on their website
Setanta Sports, our 24/7 channel in Canada, is available for a residential monthly fee of $14.99 through:
Bell TV (Channel 420), Cogeco (Channel 421), Rogers (Channel 429), Rogers HD (Channel 569) Shaw (Channel 154), Star Choice (Channel 239) and NEXTV.
better not be any shenanigans going on here with Bell

according to Oliver Kay at the Times the Milner to Man City deal looks to go through
not sure what is going back yet though, either cash or cash + player (likely Ireland)

Just an FYI that it is up on Bell's guide now but not accessible, I thought we get a free trial. Doesn't matter I was going to order it anyway but not until next week. Tonight is Norwich and Watford.

ya I see it as well, looking forward to the community shield on sunday for it to work
according to the Bell free preview guide it starts for Setanta on the 13th and goes to the 22nd, so basically the first 2 weeks of the Premier league season

Martin O'Neill has resigned as manager of Aston Villa just five days before the start of the Premier League season.
There had been speculation over his future at Villa Park with the impending sale of James Milner and interest in Ashley Young from Premier League rivals.
O'Neill was close to leaving Villa at the end of last season but opted to stay after talks with owner Randy Lerner.
"Aston Villa can confirm that Martin O'Neill has resigned as manager of the football club with immediate effect,'' the club said in a statement.

Not a big shock, rumors of his discontent with Lerner getting involved in deals has been around for awhile
and they lost 43m pounds last year I think
Jol, Curbishly, Sven and Bradley are favorites to take over

Too lazy to provide a link, but Carvalho is supposedly heading to Real Madrid.

Steven Gerrard says Joe Cole is better than Lionel Messi, and picks Cole to win player of the year.
Messi can do some amazing things, but anything he can do Joe can do as well, if not better. I really fancy Joe for the [player of the year] award this season.
Who is your predicted player of the year? (Previous five winners: Rooney, Giggs, Ronaldo, Ronaldo, Gerrard)
I'm obviously hoping for the Rooney repeat.

They were replying to my earlier post where I was trying to decide whether ordering Setanta purely for Norwich was going to be worth it...
My Norwich connection comes from my folks. Even though I was born here, all of my relatives with the exception of my parents and sister still live there. Mum is from Drayton, Dad from up near Mousehold. I've got relatives all over the place there - Sprowston, Costessey, Dereham, etc. Two of my cousins are season ticket holders in the River End too.
So really, I had no choice but to support Norwich. I have been to a few games whenever I get the chance, and even a few from when they were in the Premiership. I roadtripped it from Norwich to Sheffield in 1999 for an FA Cup third round match, which we lost miserably 4-1, but it was a lot of fun. It sure is hard to hide a bright yellow collar under your jacket when walking the mean streets of Sheffield.
All of that being said, I believe that I read somewhere on here that diane_phaneuf has a Norwich connection also.

If Aston Villa were a company? Barclays Prudent, with a history dating back to 1874, Villa have a great deal in common with Barclays, one of the few UK banks that did not need a government hand-out in the financial crisis. Both have healthy reserves. On the downside, the club has been shaken by the shock resignation of its manager Martin O’Neill.

Norwich signed Canadian striker Simeon Jackson a few weeks ago, even more reason to support them!

Danny Welbeck on loan to Sunderland for a year
I think thats a good move for both, I hope Sunderland do well this year only because of my undying like of Steed, he never should have been sold
