ALERT: Despite comments from Public Safety Minister Vic Toews earlier in the day, officials are now saying Canadian authorities have not boarded the Tamil migrant ship off the coast of British Columbia. Canadian authorities are believed to be escorting the vessel.

Its a tough situation, as at the end of the day, these are people who likely paid vast sums of money to (or are indebted to) dirty traffickers who shoved them on a boat promising the Canadian dream.

The media might have been too hasty in reporting it.

The worst part is that these people offer absolutely nothing to Canada.

The jobs they can do should and can be taken by legal immigrants who are specifically brought to Canada to work in places like Walmart and fast food restaurants. But they go through the legal process, and are only brought here because they have a job waiting, houses waiting, etc, etc.

These people will need to be cared for until we can figure out what to do with them.

If there are known terrorist aboard, they should probably be rounded up and put into prison. Hopefully that is what will be done.

PM's office confirms boarding this evening. ~490 people on board. Boat will be steered to CFB Eskee.
Looks like they want to send a message to the other potential boats.

We have decent submarines now...Why didn't we just send them out a week ago to intercept it?

Then the PMO could have released a Putin-esque statement, like he did regarding the Somalian pirates...

"The Tamil Tigers were released last night by the HMCS Corner Brook. No sign of their boat has been seen since. We presume they've gone home"

Looks like the boat will hit Canadian shore sometime in the next few hours...should be interesting to see how they handle the logistics of it.

What is tough about it - we as Canadians owe them nothing. Throw them a couple boxes of ritz crackers and cheese and some diesel fuel and send them packing.

I could put up with this gong show if it was a Liberal government but this is a Conservative government. I realize you whore yourself out to get the ever precious fence sitting easterner vote but we in the west accept this because a Conservative government who panhandles for eastern support the odd time is better than a Liberal government based there.

But this is one of those times where you need to be Conservative and send them on their way. In war some times people lose and just because they dont get there way doesnt give them cause to claim asylum in Canada.

This whole episode is really digusting me.

Well until the laws are changed, you better get used to seeing boat people. In 2008 we had 37,000 asylum seekers.

I can only assume this was posted in jest. I actually laughed when I read his "hard line" comments. The guy likes to talk a big game but we both know he's not going to do anything. Canada is the limp-wristed pushover of the world, catering to special interest groups and their bleeding heart buddies....and the illegals know it.

They'll board the boat, 100% of the 490 people will deny that they are the captain/crew/smugglers/terrorists, they will have zero documentation, and CBSA will have no way to prove otherwise. Too predictable. Do they expect these guys to just go, "I'm a terrorist, you got me" ?

In October, the Ocean Lady, a rusting cargo ship carrying 76 Tamils, was intercepted by HMCS Regina and docked at Ogden Point, in Victoria.
Despite claims that 25 of those onboard were Tamil Tigers, the Canadian Border Service Agency was forced to release the last of them for a lack of evidence.
Bunch of clowns. Can't blame the US for tightening border security when we are harboring terrorists, and not just that, but making sure they're more comfortable than Canadians who have paid taxes their whole lives.

We have a problem because these people can avail themselves of the protection of the Charter as soon as they reach Canadian territory, which is why my comment re submarines earlier in the thread was only half in jest. Now that they are here, they have rights, which is why you have to do whatever you can to ensure that they never actually make it "here"...

Turn em around and direct them to Siberia. Russia wants to spy on us - it's payback time.

$50,000 is the going rate, owed to the traffickers, no doubt this debt will be paid by honest Canadians, the victims of the crimes that will repay the debt to the criminals that "sold" them a good taxpayer funded life in Canada.

In 1980 during a harsh recession and interest rates approaching 20%, we were forced to accept 50,000 Vietnamese boat people and provide everything because they didn't have any family or sponsorship in Canada.

How did that work out for society ? I don't know, just throwing that out there.
