I think the spirit of the thread only demonizes people who grew up wealthy and recieved 300-600 thousand dollar loans from their brother and think Micheal Jackson was the best entertainer of all-time and think that Johnny Cash made no meaningful contribution to music! Therefore no apology needed nor demanded of you.

For me it wasn't even the loan. It was when he said 300-600 thousand dollars isn't much money, when in fact only the richest 20% of Canadians have a net worth above $679K. It's just such a dopey, spoiled thing to say.

Big deal if they pay for your $80,000 truck, and $1.2 million dollar house. People should have to earn those essential things themselves. And no that doesn't mean dad can't help out.

I guess one thing you should know is, education status is a big thing down here. (Note I said education status, not just education). Upper middle-class can pull out 300-600k for their kid to go to a nice school, but they don't do it easily - this is like their life savings. Especially for students from India, a lot of them spend their family fortune on university.

I am a little surprised to see so few people have <300k or <500k. Isn't that sort of... scary? Not in terms of bragging wealth, but thats nothing for retirement.

I knew a kid in high school who got an $80,000 truck for his 16th birthday. Got drunk and totaled ON THE SAME DAY. His parents just bought him a new one.

One place I like getting relatively high quality dress shirts from is Charles Thyrwitt (http://www.ctshirts.co.uk/). It was recommending to me by a high falootin fashion designer, and it's been a great find.

They have some fancy high-end stores in Mahattan and London, but they also offer their stock online. These shirts are much higher quality than what you get at Banana Republic, Club Monaco, etc....but at a good price. They almost always have some sort of sale on, so you can get good deals.

They have great french-cuff shirts, slim-fits (if you hate the ballooning effec of most dress-shirts), and even non-irons (which are great for the single man who doesn't have a in ironing robot, err I mean wife/gf).

You live in NYC. You have an endless supply of the worlds best at your fingertips. If you're used to spending your money at stores in New York, my websites are probably not for you.

I generally use those two sites because they tailor make the clothing to fit you, which I find is much better than off the rack obviously, and the fact that they are not ridiculously expensive. Keep in mind this stuff is still made in China, not in Italy. The quality is fine for the most part, but they are not European garments.

I do not have the money to spend $300 on one pair of pants or shirt. I spent $400 on shoes as a starting point because I know they will outlast my Aldos, and really, in the long run, they will probably end up being cheaper than buying a new pair of $80 shoes every year or two.

I think we'd need to see ages broken out of those net worth numbers to know if it's scary or not. A 30 year old dude that doesn't have $300,000 banked aint no thang.

Lesson: don't buy crap shoes

Even for business dress shoes, $300 sounds crazy and dress shoes should last for years if you're walking from your bedroom to the garage, getting out in the underground parking at the office and riding the elevator up, then walking to your office. Repeat the opposite when you go home.

But I spend about $150-$175 every three or four months for new running shoes or about every 600 km.

And I'm not even a fanatic. Those guys might replace them every month and a half.

Next time you are in the US at an outlet mall, buy a couple pairs of Doc Martin dress shoes, different colors and styles. Should be less than $100 per pair, and they last for years.

I am very appreciative to work for an employer who cares far more about the work that I do, than the clothes that I wear.

I enjoy a very casual work experience that is geared toward production over appearance. Many of the people I work with have come from other O&G producers that have had strict dress codes. Many of them find our work environment to be "too" casual. This attitude always changes within a few years of them being at our company as they realize we are totally 100% results orientated. Work hours are very flexible as are dress codes.

I participate in many meetings, often with upper management from other producers and have been asked many times if I was wearing jeans on a tuesday because of a special occasion. I think it does not bode well for anyone in these meetings to underestimate me, or my team.
