When I need a suit I go to a custom suit tailer, that way I can select the material, the lining, the cut the drape and the fit. I also tend to do the same with my dress shirts.

Not to mention you can get much higher quality material, fits, and cuts for a fraction of the price of a designer suit/shirt.

The only way to go.

I am very skeptical about the big designer "off the rack" suits. I have a made-to-measure Varvatos suit that I got for very cheap at a sidewalk sale in NYC. Full price it would have been about $1800.

Looking at it now, I am so happy I only paid a fraction of that amount. The designers get away with having a big name, charging big prices for fashionable cuts and take all the short cuts that they can get away with.

When I was in New York I was so tempted by some of those sidewalk sales.

At the end of the day though I didn't trust the whole 2 designer suits for 499.

So where is a good place to go in Calgary for this. I'm a young fellow (24) and I normally just bought the standard stuff at Banana Republic etc... but I'm tired of paying 100+ for a shirt that doesn't last very long, wears out in the armpits, buttons fall off etc...

I'm looking to pay similar prices for custom clothing. The poster "worth" told me about Giovanni's Tailor Shop in the NE. Anyone have experience there?

I bought a pair of Aldo dress shoes about 5 years ago for $120. All I did was use the standard Aldo all weather spray and their leather cleaner before and after every use. The first year I wore them constantly, and less and less over the years just for strictly formal events now and they still look almost brand new. I am very impressed with the quality.

I am a jean nut but for shoes I just like a pair of basic Nike kicks old school style, $120 a pop last me a summer and I am happy. But as a denim addict I can see where you are coming from.

Queue the Saskatchewan tuxedo jokes.

It's a good-looking charcoal suit except for one thing that I noticed the other day that pisses me off to no end. The buttons are just SEWED on to the sleeve! S!

You guessed right though, I paid around $300.

I'm basically a self-made man in that regards. My parents helped me out in my BA with providing me with a roof over my head, but everything else was on my own dime. I'm pretty proud of that now. Spoiled kids are the worst.

I had 2 pair of Aldo shoes for a couple years, each cost $80, they were falling apart and lok like crap. Are impossible to clean and are all around terrible shoes and are even more uncomfortable.

Last year I went into O'Connors and told myself I was going to come out with a good pair of Allen Edmonds. These shoes are made in the US, from genuine materials, and are a very good shoe.

$400 later, I walked away with the best pair of shoes i've ever worn, which will last for the rest of my life.

Yes, $400 is expensive for a pair of shoes relative to Aldo, but if you get them resoled every once in a while, they will not fall apart and last forever.

I will never go back to an Aldo POS shoe.

And just because i'm a nice guy, and this thread was made at exactly the right time, O'Connors is having a mens shoe sale:

===========================================

99% of men wear really terrible shoes. Once you wear a pair of nice shoes, and you learn a bit about them, you will notice everyone's shoes. And you will see how much crap is out there. You can pick out the people who takes a bit of pride in what they wear. Not many men do. jeans and T-shirt are OK for a lot of people. That's just not my style.

Also, side note, get your pants hemmed. 99% of men wear pants that are way too long. Stuff off the rack is made to fit as many people as possible. It is not made to fit you. Spend the $10 when you buy a nice pair of slacks.

=============================

The other thing you can do is figure out your shoe size and order off ebay. There are lots of used AE shoes on there for less than $100. This makes the most sense to me and I did this with my second pair. Got a nearly new pair of wingtips for $88. I'm wearing them now actually.

Exactly what I did, was in Vancouver for New years and had to dress formal for a party.

My problem is my big ass feet, I went to 7 stores, finally found some size 13's that just fit me, and they cost me about $230 on sale.

Mind you they are awesome shoes, so comfy.

I bought my house and car myself, but I'm saying most are. My parents didn't want me to move, wanted to give me their house,etc

I was spoiled overall though.

I have never paid more than $80 for shoes (other than football and basketball) and they work fine for 2 years, then you garbage them and buy some new ones.

It sounds weird, but my "white friends" always say hey how do you guys have so much money?

It's a philosophical thing. My brother gave me a very low cash loan in the 300-600 thousand range. He helped me

I'm going to give my son/daughter/etc the same or pass things down
