While I agree that parts of some of the songs are weak, the same can be said for pretty much all albums by any artist. Recovery, for the most part, is very well written IMO.

It's not only about lyrics. Listen to that song and just listen to the emotion coming out of his voice. Guy brings it and has made that song into one of his most popular in a short time.

Chad Kroeger sings with a lot of conviction, too. His lyrics and his band still suck.

I love how whenever someone wants to express how bad they think something is they compare it to Nickelback. It warms my heart.

For the record, I don't think Eminem or this album is as bad as Nickelback. I was just making a point. But yes, Nickelback is the measuring stick for suck.

To be honest, Love the Way You Lie isn't even top 5 on the album IMO. Not Afraid is in a world of its own, then comes No Love, Almost Famous, 25 to Life, Space Bound, and then I would say Love the Way you Lie.

Yeah and? Chad Kroeger might not be the most popular person on CP for some reason (I really don't know the back story since there is a serious hate on for him.) but even though I'm not a fan of his music I can recognize he has talent. He must be doing something right in a music industry which has no heart and will crush you without hesitation.
Please tell me who you listen to so I can pick apart their lyrics and music.

I think rubecube and Mayer need to start posting their own lyrics.

Not Afraid...that's the one. The chorus is like a Celine Dion song. Lamest song ever. A couple f-bombs can't save that song from being as lame as a christian rock song. Popular music is in bad shape.

I never said Eminem wasn't talented. I LIKE Eminem. I just don't like this album. I really like early Eminem. Sure the lyrics were juvenile in a lot of ways, but at least there was some creativity to them.
EDIT: There are a lot of bands/artists I like that don't write great lyrics but are incredibly talented musicians. The consequence of being a rap artist like Eminem is that you're going to be judged bascially on your lyrics while your producer gets credit for the beats.

I would, but then I'd have to explain why to your family that the reason there's brain jelly all over your keyboard is because you couldn't handle the awesomeness.

This was a nice album from Eminem. It's a good start to becoming the rapper he was suppose to be before all the drugs and other factors made him mediocre. It's one of those albums I wouldn't mind listening from start to finish. Each song has a different flavor to it. I'm also liking the fact where he didn't use the same old forumla where he has a song with D12, Dr. Dre, and 50 Cent. I enjoy the lil wayne collabo. Also Rihanna's voice to me is always nice so made Love the way you lie that much more enjoyable. No more potty humor and more real life material. It's not the best album by far but a very enjoyable one all the same.

I don't recall a time when people weren't saying this. You've got pockets of people that like the current state of music and people who don't. Those two groups just seem to take turns complaining so that there is never a time when music is actually good.

Agreed. I actually think music as a whole has never been better. There's so much variety out right now that we simply had no access to before. I would say I still like a lot of 60s and 70s classic rock better than a lot of new stuff, but I think the 00s were a better decade for music than the 90s.

I find this statement funny.....a bit dismissive? no?..do you listen to Christian rock? Not sure if you do or not but regardless there is some very good stuff to be found in this genre regardless of your beliefs....it isn't my favorite genre but you can't dismiss it outright......heck I would even listen to Muslim Rock if it was good and I knew there was such a thing....recent favorites :
Indie Rock : Sufjan Stevens : Illinois
Light Rock : Anberlin : Cities
Hard Rock : Switchfoot : Hello Hurricane
Heavy Rock : Red : Innocence & instinct
Thrash Rock : Emery : In shallow seas we sail
All the above are anything but lame and are very lyrically challenging. Most of it happens behind the curtains and just because they aren't mainstream doesn't mean it is crap. Eminem plays to his audience/white rapper/underdog/tough life/disfunctional/women.../f-you/angry narcissist....the message/lyrics are crap/corny and he is the biggest sell out of all time. It will never change even if he is recovering...

First part of your post..I am dismissive of organized religion so I probably am dismissive of christian rock.
Second part of your post..totally agree. The Eminem single comes on the radio after Katy Perry's California song and people think its edgy and passionate. That "Not Afraid" song is completely contrived and so is the sweeping sentiment that this is Eminem's big revival. Its the marketing machine at its best. Eminem is pretty much as mainstream and corporate as it gets now. That's not to dismiss everything he does, but lets not delude ourselves into thinking that he's making some really edgy, gutsy music. Seriously, that song reminds me of an afterschool special or something like that. Overproduced garbage.

Kobi Farhi
Check out this amazing interview from Angry Metal Guy:

Exerpt:
It’s basically a concept album about the warrior of light who is not some kind of any [irrelevant?] messiah who is going to come and rescue all of us, but the warrior of light is in simple words it’s just me, you and you know the listener who listens to the album. Because we believe that people all around the world are living in this frustration, wherever you look at them. I don’t mean the Middle East, but everywhere. People are unhappy. Whether it’s capitalism or their parents, girlfriend or even teacher or priest. They’re not really happy about the way the world is looking out [sic]. And the way we see the world is that there is a very big chaotic, spiritual darkness that we are into.
When it comes to the Middle East this is like this black circle that goes on and on between Israelies and Palestinians or Jews and Muslims. But if you goes centuries back you see the Abrahamic religions killing each other for centuries. So, this darkness of ours we are trying to light the inner light of each and every one of [us] human beings because we very much believe that human nature is also good when your inner light is on. When you’re able to see that we are all pretty much the same and that there is no difference to categorize people or to think that you’re different than the other or to not want to communicate with the other.

In a similar vein, I’d say it’s actually fairly important that popular music be judged to suck, it’s what keeps artists innovating.

Wow... glad you decided to judge the entire album off TWO RADIO SINGLES! Good job buddy.
But in reality the word play and multi syllable rhymes used in this album are untouchable. He has actually matured lyrically over the years and has even surpassed his best rhymes from prior albums. Some examples of very subtle, easily missed punchlines:
Quote:
Not Afraid: "What you think, I'm doing this for me, so **** the world
Feed it beans, it's gassed up, if it thinks its stopping me"
Almost Famous: "When I come back like nut on your spine"
You're Never Over: "So I'm gonna fukc 'til I die, yeah I'ma DO IT to death"
You're Never Over: "Excuse the corny metaphor. They'll never catch up (ketchup) to all this energy that I've mustered (mustard)"
Cinderella Man: "Sheit my Potatoes baked homie the veggies on my plate can fly. My filet is smokin weed, yea f****t the steaks (stakes) are high"
No Love: "When I'm not even in my harshest
You can still get roasted because Marsh (Marshall) is not mellow (Marshmallow)"
Cold Wind Blows: "I'll be nicer to women when the Aqua Man drowns and The Human Torch starts swimming"
Untitled: "Put the math back into Mathers cause I'm a fukin' problem"
"Girl you got a hot butt/ like a lit cigarette"
"Every last word that you ****in **** heard/ come straight from the fish's a$$ yeah in other words I'm a bass turd/lookin at me like I killed Kenny (you *******!)"
"Eat your heart out, Hannibal"
"Listen garden tool, don't make me introduce you to my power tool, you know the ****in DRILL, how you DOOSHBAGS feel knowin you're DISPOSABLE, summer's eve, massengill"
"Here I come screaming ATTACK(A TAC!) like I just stepped on one!"
|
Really if you can touch that lyrically, please enlighten us smart guy.
