I'd go check out a few music stores (Long and McQuade, Axe) and try out several, even some that more are than your budget allows. Once you narrow it down a bit then check Kijiji/Craigslist to see if anyone is selling one. Takimine, Taylor, and Seagull are great brands IMO.
I bought a Seagull and love it. It's actually quite a bit cheaper in canada because of the tax for importing it into the U.S. You can get a guitar that retails for $600 in the US for 4-450 here in canada.
My wife has one and she loves it. Terrific sound... just as good as some guitars that are twice as expensive.
The Yamaha FG700S has always rated very highly in price and quality comparisons/reviews. Do a Google search on it. Everyone raves about the quality and the sound.

Looks like a beauty, congrats. Did you get to play one somewhere?
No, bought it online and took the risk. The sound is oustanding on this thing, am very happy with it. Now if only I could play outstanding to make it worthwhile.

I have some nice guitars but none of them have a knob for turning down the 'suck'. As long as you enjoy playing it that's all that counts. Good luck and happy playing!
Go to Vintage Guitars on 21st Ave and 14th Street NW. They will do you an awsome deal and give you the best advice. http://vintagemusic88.supersites.ca/
I would say, keep checking the used Musical Instruments on Kijiji. Garrison guitars (Canadian made, now owned and operated by Gibson) were quality instruments in my opinion for a decent dollar. As others have mentioned Seagull and Simon & Patrick are other good brands.
I personally like the new line of Epiphone acoustics as well.
My dream guitar is a Martin D-45. I got to play one in Calgary at Long and Mquade a while back. The guitar is 12,000 dollars. I'm still not sure its worth that kind of money, in fact I know its not. My old and battered Seagull acoustic mic'd up through my strawberry blonde amp still sounds mint.
