Why would you listen to music with only one ear bud, don't you listen to stereo music?

The worst iPod type thing I have seen was two years ago when I was in Hawaii. Was at a fancy restaurant for dinner there was a dad and a son sitting a table beside us. It was packed and because of the type of place it was it was a long meal. The kid had his ear phones in and was playing with his PSP. Dinner came and he paused his game and took the ear phones out and ate. After dinner he busted the PSP right out again. They probably said about 5 words to each other the whole night and the dad was just staring into space while the kid played his game. I wanted to smack the kid and smack the dad for not smacking his kid.
Last week a guy almost walked into a speeding transit police van on 7th because he was looking at the lights to walk and couldn't hear the van with it's siren blaring. Everyone had to yell at him to not keep walking across the street.

I suppose it depends on what type of work you are doing. I listen to podcasts or music all day and it doesn't wreck my productivity at all. In fact the music especially helps tune out everything going on around me in my open office and focus on the task at hand.
With that said I usually can't listen to podcasts or music with lyrics if I am crunching numbers and reading or writing emails. But most my day doesn't consist of that so the music and podcasts help. Plus I keep the volume really low so I can hear the phone ring and people talking to me.

So what you're saying is I shouldn't be listening to my IPOD and texting on my Blackberry while im standing in the middle of the doorway?
I'd love to say the same things about the parents needing to crack down on this, but I was also one of those walkman/discman kids in the back seat listening to music. One thing I dont like seeing is some 8 year old kid with a IPHONE, if I had a kid you'd be waiting til you were 16 at the very least unless you are happy with using a Zack Morris edition.

Same here. I work with numbers all day and just have light music on. And it's not music that would really distract me. It's stuff I've listened to countless times and just goes in one ear and out the other.
Without music on, the chatter and gossip would really distract me.

Most egregious use of a mobile device was at a urinal. A guy was actually urinating and checking something on his iphone at the same time. Dear lord, put your gadget down for one second.

one hand gets jealous because the other is holding the junk. That's why it grabbed the iphone

How is that bad? You have 40s to kill, one hand free and no one is going to care if you are off in your own world. Victimless if you ask me.
No if he was holding his dick and his phone in the same hand that would be weird. Or if he used both hands for his phone and just let his urine spray wherever it wanted.

It's for situations where I need to hear for a minute or at most. Like if I'm walking through a busy intersection or crowded street. That way I can just put in the other headphone when I'm back to a non-crowded area rather than having to pick both up, check which one is right and left, perhaps untangle them a bit, and put them on. It also allows me to keep with the flow of a song. If I just stop listening to it for a minute, I lose the feel and have to start over.

Not sure if you're serious, but 40 seconds? Seriously? You must have one hell of a bladder.

Honestly, I am not one to wear my i-pod outside from walking into work or over to a buddy's places (never in the car, that is simply ######ed). But, I have found when shopping for grocery's (or whatever) abroad it makes it much easy to have earphones in. It seems everytime I dont I have 10 people come up and start talking to me in a foriegn language asking god knows what and I have to try and explain I have no clue what they're talking about! So yes, I wear the ipod alot more overseas just to make life a little simpler.
Edit: I leave em' in at the tills as well - this way I dont have to speak to the cashier and thus am never outed as a foreigner! HaHa!

Use your iPhone to look up the definition of "conversation." Its what a lot of families consider down-time.

Why not just order the stuff you want from the iPhone from the internet while taking a dump at work? Now THAT would be productivity!

iPod shoppers: I'm guilty of this one. However, the only times I have my iPod in my hand are to start and stop the music. My playlists are configured in such a way I never have to skip through songs to get what I want to hear. Every song queued up is one I want to hear, and one I haven't heard in at least 7 days (unless it was added to my library recently and has a play count of less than 10).
I get where people come from in their frustration. Heck, I'm one of them, and I sympathize. But honestly, not all iPod shoppers are bad. To elaborate, when i Ipod shop, my head is up and I am bee-lining right for where I want to go. I get out of peoples' ways, and I move around them if they're in mine. My iPod is in my back pocket and never comes out once I leave home. When I get to the cashier, I pull my headphones out, and only put them back in after I have my receipt.
My point is, not all iPod shoppers are bad.

So I’m just curious, after reading this whole thread. If these people weren’t wandering around with headphones on, what would you move on to next to judge and condemn them for? How loudly they breath? Their gait while walking? Hair colour?

Sorry that the concept has confused you. You can just sit at the other table and look at my family and get mad. Oh wait. You will be having a conversation with your family and not notice.
But then that is probably the basis of your conversation. "Look at that family over there. Their children are playing games on their iPhones. What kind of stupid family are they? Don't they know that they should be having a nice conversation like we are. Stupid people."
