Default The Official 2010/2011 Champions League Thread

Figured now would be a good time to start the European Thread.

The draw for the playoff round was today. These two-legged ties will be played on August 17/18 and August 24/25.

Champions Route
Red Bull Salzberg (AUT) vs. Hapoel Tel Aviv (ISR)
Rosenborg (NOR) vs Copenhagen (DEN)
Basel (SWI) vs Sheriff Tiraspol (MOL)
Sparta Prague (CZE) vs. Zilina (SVK)
Partizan Belgrade (SER) vs Anderlecht (BEL)

Non-Champions Route
Young Boys (SWI) vs. Tottenham Hotspur (ENG)
Braga (POR) vs Sevilla (ESP)
Werder Breman (GER) vs Sampdoria (ITA)
Zenit St. Pete (RUS) vs Auxerre (FRA)
Dynamo Kiev (UKR) vs Ajax (NED)

The 10 winners will then join the 22 automatic teams in the main tournament of 32.

The 22 teams are:

Inter Milan (ITA) (holders)
Chelsea (ENG)
Manchester United (ENG)
Arsenal (ENG)
Barcelona (ESP)
Real Madrid (ESP)
Valencia (ESP)
Roma (ITA)
AC Milan (ITA)
Bayern Munich (GER)
Schalke 04 (GER)
Marseille (FRA)
Lyon (FRA)
Rubin Kazan (RUS)
Spartak Moscow (RUS)
Shakhtar Donetsk (UKR)
Twente (NED)
CFR Cluj (ROM)
Benfica (POR)
Bursaspor (TUR)
Panathinaikos (GRE)
Ranger (SCO)

Not sure if this was discussed elsewhere, but UEFA will be using an additonal official behind each goal to help with goalline calls, penalties, and infringements in the area. Seems that at least some attempt to actually get calls right is being made, which is rather stunning considering that FIFA still had final say over this.

The Young Boys? That must strike fear in the hearts of opponents.

I guess I'll be following Bayern Munich in the CL this year.

Consider also, Boca Juniors, Newell's Old Boys (both from ARG) and The Strongest (Bolivia).

Not a great draw for Dinamo, but should be able to beat Ajax (I hope).

I'll laugh forever if they beat Tottenham. All that work to get to the CL, favourable draw, gone....

I can see it now...

Make that 2-0, shocking!

Looks like Spurs thought this was going to be easy and underestimated the Young Boys of Bern

Not shocked that it is 2-0 so early, insanely shocked that Young Boys are the team that have the lead.

Still plenty of time for Spurs to come back (especially against this team) but not exactly the best way to start out the Champions League when handed a gift of a draw.

3-0 now.

Full marks to Young Boys they have taken advantage of every bounce they have received and finished the 3 chances they have got.
