ipod before social skills/safety

I've had customer service type jobs for 20 years, when I'm out on my lunch breaks, my headphones are in because I really don't need to listen to any more of you human types.

I do listen to it in the car on occasion when the kids are sleeping in the car, just so I don't wake them up (on road trips).

Daughter goes to school all day. She is learning. So then after school when we head out for dinner she wants some of her own time for awhile. So her choice is to play a game. What is wrong with that? Dad and mom chat about adult stuff for a bit. Food gets there and it is family time. Sounds fine to me.

Texting is different. If you're in a social situation but you're texting a girl, then it is ok unless your talking about something stupid like not punani. If you're texting a guy about your math homework, you're a fruit.

Usually only at Christmas time, if I'm shopping alone. It allows me to shop without having to listen to Christmas music and stops sales people from pestering me. I like to get in and get out!

I do that, too. It makes a boring/lame experience moderately enjoyable. It's not like it's hard to take them out if you see somebody you know or when you get to the check-out.

It's funny because I don't like tuning people out. I enjoy listening in on other people's conversations (yes, you can call it eavesdropping), and some of the things you hear, can just be down right hilarious.

I won't start chuckling from the music on my MP3 player as I would from some of the things I hear that's for sure.

Not in this office, it's just nonsense and it goes on and on and on.
And since I'm a girl I can't ignore it, I'd have to join in on the gossip and get into trouble.

So better to tune it out and act like a potential serial killer.

If people want to use their iPods or text at every opportunity that’s fine, however, the implications and effects that behavior will have on their social skills later on in life would be pretty dire I’d imagine.

meh. I tuned people out with my walkman in the 80's and I can deal with people just fine.

I rarely, if ever, go shopping without my headphones on. It's pretty much the only thing that keeps me from yelling at the people who block entire aisles with their carts or tripping the brats that parents let run around the store.

both my wife and i work - my wife makes more money than i do - so i only work four days per week, and on the 5th day i take care of the household stuff like laundry and grocery shopping - it is also awsome to be able to walk the kids to school one day per week - anyways both of us working is teh difference between being able to provide extras like hockey schools and trips to mexico every couple of years and dinners out every once and a while.

i'd love to sit and the dinner table and have a long discussions with my kids about sports, politics etc - but that being said they are 5 & 8 and they are more interested in playing - and these days they play electronic devices.....

are we doing the right thing for our kids - i guess we won't know the answer to that until they are adults.....

I just love it when somebody is blocking my way shopping and wearing earphones and can't hear me say excuse me as I am now stuck or I have to tap them to get their attention.

I've got the iPod on all the time when I'm on foot. I make a point of shutting 'er off when I talk to a cashier or friend.

I never have my earphones in while driving or on the bike, however. When I'm riding the pathways, I'm usually pretty good with using the bell to warn pedestrians or other bikers that I'm passing. When some momo has got the earphones on and is grooving all over the path (e.g. in-line skaters), I have no compunction about simply blowing past them. Gets a good reaction usually. Just saying that one should remain aware of their environment, or prepare to be surprised.

I always take one headphone out in a crowded setting for just this reason.
