Fair enough. It doesn't have to be Apple btw, you can substitute any good smartphone on the market and the same applies.

Same for my phone. Calls sound great, battery life is fantastic compared to other devices I've used, I use BBM all the time (which I could not do on other phones), typing on the keyboard is a breeze, SMS, MMS, BBM, email is instant using my Gmail account, I have tons of apps I use for free from AppWorld and I have several themes loaded, one that I currently use that meets all my needs, but allows me to customize the screen the way I want and not what everyone else may have.
I also recently was watching Colin James at Telus Stage here at Capitol Ex and took some great night time shots with my BB. Not sure how my camera is inferior. Inferior I suppose if you want to compare specs, but you know what, it did what I wanted it to do. It took great quality pictures at night. And it's a freakin' cell phone.

It isn't a cell phone. It is a smart phone. A cell phone is your old Star Tac.

I use it to communicate. Does it really matter?
In my opinion, BB's are the best "communication" tools out there. For phone calls, BBM, SMS and email, there is nothing better.
In my opinion.

Does it matter? Yes and no.
You're argument was predicated on your 9700 doing all these amazing things for a cell phone. To be that is like being impressed that your car can drive on water when it is really a hovercraft.
They both get you from a to b, but do different things and thus have different expectations.
And yes I am splitting hairs.

My plan is up and I need to re up.. worth waiting for any BB's coming out in the near future?

My argument is not that at all. My argument is that the 9700 does everything I need it to do. Call it a cell phone, a smart phone, a whatever you want.
I believe my 9700 is better for what I need than anything else on the market. And in the end, that's all that matters for me...MY needs. I don't care if Androids or iPhone's have 8 GB of RAM and 8 GHz processors. It doesn't matter to me at all.
I really don't understand this fascination with having to have the greatest thing on the market just because it has more RAM or a faster processor or a bigger screen. I buy what I need. It's that simple. The 9700 is an excellent "communication" device. And for me and my money, it does it better than anything else out there. So really, call it whatever you want.

Fair enough. I was referring to this line. "It took great quality pictures at night. And it's a freakin' cell phone".
Regardless I'm happy you made the right choice for you.

Rough couple of days for RIM. Android ships more units in Q2, 50% of US users don't want to be BB users anymore, countries threatening to ban BBs 'cause of their encrypted centralized data servers, stock down after their big press event where they essentially release the Palm Pre with a better camera...
They will be #4 by this time next year.

I've got a storm 2. Its pretty good but I would wait. This phone has been out for a while and something newer would be worth waiting for.

Sounds like a lot of FUD to me...
Android ships more units than they have before because they are shiny and new. BB still shipped a ton of units and sales were up 4%.
Some countries are threatening to ban the use of BBM, not BB's. Edit: In reading some more, it looks like BB data services that would be effected in these countries as the countries want more access to encrypted data. Hmmm.sounds to me like RIM is doing the right thing and not bowing currently. I don't think the government should have access to any of my information regardless of country.
They apparently included about 2,000 people in that survey. Not a huge sample size at all IMO.
And you points about the new 9800 are simply opinion.

Seems more crippling than just BBM, Blackberry e-mail, BBM, and Internet.

Yup, RIM for the win.
I don't want some sheikh in some backwards-ass country, as progressive for a middle-eastern country as it is, to be able to look at my data usage in detail and decrypt my messages at will.

BlackBerry maker to resist pressure from Gulf govts
Mike Lazaridis, founder and co-chief executive of Canadian-based Research in Motion, told The New York Times that allowing governments to monitor messages on the BlackBerry networks would imperil the firm's relationships with customers, including major corporations and law enforcement agencies.
"We're not going to compromise that," Lazaridis said. "That's what's made BlackBerry the number one solution worldwide."
Lazaridis said the encryption causing alarm among some governments was used for many legal purposes including e-commerce transactions, teleconferencing and electronic money transfers.
"If you were to ban strong encryption, you would shut down corporations, business, commerce, banking and the Internet," he said. "Effectively, you'd shut it all down. That's not likely going to happen."

I'd wait, or get the 9700. Storms are not slated to get the OS6 upgrade.

Endgadget has their review of the new Torch up:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/04/b...-torch-review/
I was really interested to see what RIM did with OS6. Endgadget is less than impressed with it. Although it sounds like RIM is catching up with the rest of the smartphone market in terms of producing a web browsing device. That'll be a welcome improvement.

Don't bother with Storm 2. Other than Wifi and couple other things, not worth it if you've got an current updated version of a BB OS.
If have to renew on CDMA for whatever reason, don't...just go month to month with what you have.
Then, the Torch has the same size screen as Storm, without the surepress.
If I stick with BB, I'd likely move onto that, get the phone for cheap by reupping. Something to be said for physical keyboard, but after having Storm 1 for almost 2 years, its tough to get used to a smaller screen.
My issue is that moving to HSPA means losing unlimited data that I got when Telus offered it for a couple months 2.5 years ago. More the principal than actually needing/using GB's of data every month (although now with Tether I am sure I can get up there if need be). Hoping that at some point I'll be able to transfer that u/l over to HSPA but not holding my breath.
Storm 3, not likley out for a year or so...I am guessing that will be more geared towards the multimedia aspect, like the Andriod Phones and IP4.
Other then that, no other new blackberries out anytime soon. I am sure by the end of the year they'll release updated versions of what is out there currently, like a Curve or updated Bold, with increased specs to better run OS6 and give devices a 5MP camera like the Torch etc.

I have a Storm 2. I enjoy it a lot, but I've heard that many users have problems with freezing, lag, etc. Since an update 2 months ago or so (I think I mentioned this a page ago or 2), I've had to pull the battery only once (which others make it sound like it's as common as having to blow into a Nintendo cartridge). I'd definitely see what the Storm3 has in store though, and the Torch as well. If the Storm 2 doesn't get OS6, I sadly don't think it's worth it.

ive had 3g since it came out, then the bold for a year and now iphone 4. they all have their pros and cons. neither is better than the other.
its like saying arguing what TYPE of apple is better for you. Its an apple. it does the same thing.
